Hello vivity, just had a quick squiz, not a bad site, lacking in some areas especially for consumers.

I wonder are they really going to implement all these codes and standards,if they listen to the consumer thats good, but if they fail to apply these rules and regulations then its pointless.

I am always suspicious of these Govenment funded sites, all they seem to achieve is jobs for more public servants feeding off the "gravy train"

Just an opinion.

Regards Billy

Most supermarket items have preservtives and additives, even the so called fresh foods.

Did you know that grapes are sprayed to plump them up.

Have you ever had an avocado that is black inside?the reason being is that they are sprayed or gassed to make sure that they have a longer storage time, and look good.

Common salt has an anti-caking agent added to it so that the pouring consisitency is smooth.

I was going to buy some coconut and found it is preservatives added  and also sulphites.

Chats potatoes are sprayed in the growing stages so that they only grow to a certain size, that means no sorting like the old days. The list goes on.

I sopke with an ex apple grower from Victoria and all his apples were exported to to Tasmania.????

So really why waste time with food standards?

Its ALL about profit.

Thanks for the link Viv

Somehow I must have missed it.

Reading your post has me on a diet for the rest of the day LOL - good thing I grow my own vegies.

I wondered why this thread did not develop legs myself, just put on the backburner, now it is back in the Market Place then others might comment!

Quote Krissy "Have you ever had an avocado that is black inside?"

I stopped buying avos because of this. Maybe something to look for is - has the avocado been pickes (e.g. no stem) or has it been cut off the tree (small stem remaining)

The black inside to avocado starts at the stem and is less likely to happen if part of the stem remains.

New Zealand avocado growers have to leave part of the stem (cut them from the tree) if they are to be exported.

I buy Australian made whenever I can ( price makes a diff tho' sometimes) especially meat products so really pleased about the new laws.

[Country of Origin Labelling has been extended to apply to unpackaged beef, sheep and chicken meat, which are the most common types of meat consumed by Australians. The new requirement takes effect on 18 July 2013.]

I used to buy Coles bread,(the baked in store Baton type loaf ) until I learned that the dough was imported frozen and then baked in the store, very misleading when it says 'baked in store'

For example it is not required when food is sold to the public for immediate consumption, for example food sold in cafes, restaurants and canteens, or where a food is made and packaged on the premises it is sold, such as a bakery where the bread is baked and sold on site.
