Who recalls the Tivoli

I was lucky enough to perform in Panto as a child. Just wondered if there are any folk who have memories of this grand old theatre

Bit more info pete.   Year, city...

Seggie. As a child, I lived next to the lady who was the dresser at the Tiv. Her name was Mrs.Stream.

I snuck away from my music lessons & went to the Tiv on the opening night  of an 18 year old English kid named Shirley Bassey.  The worst of it was that I could never tell a soul what I witnessed that night.

Oh! Wow!

Fancy seeing Shiley Bassey in person

Innes she was born in Cardiff, so is officially Welsh of an English mother and Nigerian father, Julia Gillard was born only 7 miles away in Barrie, got to say the Welsh born have plenty of spunk. Harry Secombe was another great Welsh singer.

I Thought Shirley was fantastic in the 60s, do you remember the song "As Long as He Needs me"

I remember the song vivity.  It is on a couple of my LPs, but I don't remember her singing it at the Tiv.  I do remember her singing "burn my candle".  The thing I remember most was the sinews on her neck looking like the were going to explode.

"Sinews on her neck" same with Eartha Kitt she is one singer I would also have loved to have seen.

I saw Earther Kitt twice vivity.  She was very close to being ugly & at the same time, she was the sexiest woman I have ever laid eyes on. 100% all woman.

I guess as another woman I would have said she had an earthy sensuousness about her and I found both her and what she could do with her voice fascinating also a wicked humour. You were very very lucky to have seen her twice.

As a youngster, I always thought that Brigitte Bardot was the sexiest woman on Earth.  The I saw & heard Eartha & realised that I did not have a clue what "IT" is, but Eartha had it in volumes.  Earthy sensuousness sounds like the old saying "The Grand Canyon is a little hole in the ground" !!!

Mum often took me to the Tiv' as a child

I remember the Tivoli Gardens Fairground in Copenhargen Denmark.

I am talking about the Tivoli here in Aussie --I forgot to mention that

I am talking of the Tivoli Theatre circuit mainly here in Melbourne but of coutrse I think they were in just about every capital city in Australia although not sure of a couple of states.

I am mainly thinking of fifties and sixties but perhaps some lucky folk go back further.

The Tiv in Melbourne was a magical theatre. You could see and hear anywhere you sat and the shows I was lucky enough to see were wonderful. Sadly I only saw the end of a great era but what I saw I loved.

Of course for obvious reasons you could not do A Black and White MInstrel show today but frankly that does not concern me. I always found the minstrels themselves the most uninteresting thing in the show it was the acts I loved.

Who will ever forget Jenny Howard!

bassey

Typical of the Tivoli's post-war programs is this one for Shirley Bassey's first tour in 1958

SMH

I went to the Tiv' in the 40s (Sydney)
