Parkinsons disease

Hello everyone,
My aunt has Parkinson's Disease and for the past 3 years she has suffered badly with digestive troubles. No one seems to be able to help her and I was wondering if anyone has experienced similar problems and might be able to offer a suggestion on how she can gain some relief. I've read that the disease effects the muscles in the digestive system which then causes bloating, pain, discomfort etc. This seems to be whats happening but how can the poor woman get relief. She's had all sorts of tests, been to all types of doctors, taken everything from bi carb soda, mylanta, charcoal tablets, brandy and various muscle relaxants. She's tried a gluten free diet, a wheat free diet, a fructose free diet and even just vitamised foods. She's now getting very miserable and desperate and so are we. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks...

Your best bet is to google it.

You then have to read the hits to see if any help but when I have done this with other things like Blood pressure - came up with all sorts of help to fight it.

worth a try.

Thanks for the advice. I did do alot of checking on the internet but never quite got the info I was looking for. It's certainly worth another try and thanks again for taking time to reply.

Hi barny38.

I googled for help groups and support groups for Parkinson's.

Maybe you can contact some of these.

Good luck, and do let us know how you're getting on.

PS.

Kudos to BigVal, as that's where I got the idea. :)

Thanks koko.

It's a bit of a tricky one because the Parkinson's disease web sites only give general advice about symptoms & treatment so I haven't had any luck getting info on this particular problem. I thought I'd exhausted all my options and it never occured to be to check out the support groups. Thanks for thinking outside the square.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Here is a very useful UK site hope it helps you.

Barny38 - my elderly father suffers from similar symptoms, he does not have Parkinsons. He gets bouts of severe indigestion. We have tried many things without a lot of success, but lately he has been a bit better;currently he is taking slippery elm tablets, aloe vera tablets and we have switched him to soy milk, and he has lowered his sugar intake. There is a good sugar substitute, a plant extract called stevia, that you can get from health food stores in powder or tablet form. He now seems to be having less trouble than before although he still has some bouts. I have noticed that if he has cereal in the morning he has less trouble if it is something like rice bubbles, nutra grain or cornflakes - avoid the cereals with fruit and nuts etc. He does take some medications with side effects which could be causing this pain, too.

I bought him some Panadol Rapid which I make him take at the onset of a bout and that seems to lessen it considerably.

Unfortunately he is one of those people who has always had a very low pain threshold, and he is a high-stress personality which doesn't help.

Anyway, you might try someof these things and see if they work for your aunt.

hi miss jacinta, i had similar symptoms and found i was allergic to the lactose in cows milk so i changed to liddells lactose free milk available in supermarkets. also i used to use zantac .it's a tablet ,available at chemists and on the free list if you're apensioner. i took zantac when i had an ulcer and it's really effective for indigestion hope this help a little ...suanne

Many thanks u3a, Miss Jacinta & Suanne. I'm very greatful for the advice and information. I'll go to the health food store and get the tablets suggested and also the sugar substitute sounds a good idea. My aunt was on a low frutose diet at one stage so maybe if I could give her a sugar substitute she might be able to cut down on frutose. Also suanne thanks for reminding me about Zantac I remember my husband having success with that when he was suffering bad indigestion. I've been on the internet trying a few different key words and had a bit of success with possible options. It all seems to come back to diet but unfortunately when you're elderly, living alone and suffering slight dementia its a bit of a battle. However, its all worth a try and I'm hoping if she can get some relief with the digestive issues then other things might improve as well.

Thanks again & I hope Miss Jacinta has some success with the Zantac.

Well, I tried Dad with Zantac but no effect, although on the few occasions I have had reflux it worked a treat for me. This morning when he started to complain, I said "right, you're taking a Panadol Rapid right now!!" which he did, and the pain went and didn't return all day. So far so good. He is nervous though about taking painkillers(amazing when you consider the other, prescription meds he takes) and I have to remind him that one painkiller does not an overdose make and he is after all, 95 so how much harm can it do?

Miss Jacinta - have your tried Gaviscon for Dad? It works fine for me for reflux - I also take Somac - both are on the PBS. Gaviscon works for indigestion too but mainly for reflex - Somac for acid build up - helps heal ulcers in the stomach according to the info leaflet which the chemist for once forgot to take out!!!

There is supposed to be one in all meds but for some reason chemists take them out. Doctor told me that and said they are not supposed to but also you can ask for a printout of the same thing on their computers.

Also it is on line.

http://www.mydr.com.au/medicines/cmis/A

Just look up your med and it will have the same info.

So why they take it out beats me.

Also you can get Panadeine which have 8 mg of codeine in them in boxes of 100 but have to ask for them as not on display - back room - cost $15.00 or thereabouts. Box of 24 cost around $5 so work it out - kept in back room because big box of because profit on the smaller box greater having been in business I know which - Oh yes. Profit and greed.

Panadeine Rapid are 15mg and costly to buy $6.99 for 12. So I found that taking 2 Panadeine giving you 16 mg of codeine does the job with a box of 100 for a lot less.

Maybe as you say Dad not worried bout the cost so much but maybe some else reading this is and can save a bit - particularly if on the measly age pension:(

Panadeine Forte on script - cost $7.15 as not a generic so actually do work - are 1 box 20 but very good. Only for very strong pain as if you use too many your body can get used to them and need stronger - 1 at a time.

AFAIK no stronger on PBS and if you can get along with plain paracetamol they give you on script 3 boxes of 100 and 5 repeats and according to label on the Panadeine Forte box I last got - it is the paracetamol which is more dangerous.

Have you tried here
