hearing problems

I am having a lot of problems with my hearing. I have lost almost all my hearing in one ear and not very much in the other ear. I wear hearing aids but I can hear the sounds but I have a lot of problems understanding what people are saying. I need to lip read most of the time but that is also very hard. I  am waiting to be assessed to see if I am able to get a cochlear implant.

My question is would I be able to get a disability pension. I work at a supermarket as a checkout assistant and I am really getting very stressed trying to understand the customers. I am 64, but I dont think I can wait until I can get an aged pension as I am very depressed and stressed.

I would be interested on feedback about this problem.

Hello Dasha,I have worn hearing aids for 10 years and they would not give me a DSP they said it did not affect my employment prospects,I was 54 at the time and driving a truck but you are 64 so maybe they will be sympathetic to you (is there such a thing) you could be clever and if you have good Doctor go on Sickness benefit which you can have for a 12 month maximum,Centrlink is hard now because they give out a lot of unnecessary payments to new arrivals and no doubt are limited to "x"amount per year this impacts on genuine needs of Australians, best of luck, maybe another can help.

Dasha, if you're 64 now, you get the age pension at 64 and a half, it's the same money as DSP so maybe make enquiries at c/link, good luck!

hello dasha,  it sounds as if you are really upset and i can understand this.  poor hearing would make you job very difficult, and not helped by all the noise in a supermarket.

i'm the opposite, and have been cursed (yes, cursed) with extremely sensitive hearing, and long to be a bit deaf in this noisy, modern world!   shopping, especially the loud background 'music' really irritates me.  i now find relief by wearing ear phones and playing beautiful music on my 'nano' mp3 player.

sounds as if you'll be able to retire and get the age pension soon, then you can apply for free hearing test and hearing aid, i think.   very best of luck.

Hi Dasha, I am so sorry about your hearing --deafness is a very lonely problem as people are unable to see your problem--I have great hearing so I am very lucky, however my Mother was very deaf and I know how bad it was for her especially if she was in hospital or such as she could not hear and was un able to lip read as she was also almost blind. I really feel for you and do hope that you are able to get the implant and the pension. Good luck.

This  Government has increased pensionable age from 65 years to 67 and raising to 70

You have to get onto the Disability Pension now as the Government has enacted a legislation that NDIS which covers the Disability Pension cuts out at 65. Once you turn 65 you will no longer be eligible for it.

Go and see your doctor.

I am going to stay on Disability Abby,am not taking the age pension,DSP is better for me.

thanks for all your replys. I went to see my Dr and he said I may get the disability pension. I have to go to Centrelink and pick up some forms and take them to him. I will keep you posted.

Good luck Dasha,I have a feeling you will be alright,i hope they fix you up whatever the outcome with Centrelink.

Kind Regards Billy.

thanks Billy

I would not think that deafness is an ailment that would stop you from working certain jobs.

Maybe just a change to another position in the shop would be ok for you.

I wish you good luck anyhow.

I wish it was that easy, but I have a bad back as well and cant lift anything heavy. Every other dept requires lifting stock. Ive been taking anti inflammatory medication for a lot longer than my doctor is happy with. I have enough problems lifting customers bags, but I can try not to put too many items in. Every day is a challenge.

I reckon you could get work in the theatre Dasha, you look a lot like a young Shirley Temple! lol

Billy

yeah! I look good for 64

You do too,Billy is spot on Dasha, maybe the movies as well. Good one.

Snake.
