Tattoos... dreadlocks.. piercing.. obesity etc and Jobseeking

"PERMANENT reminder of a temporary feeling!" - (Jimmy Buffett song)

I tend to cringe a little when I see someone in a healthcare or food setting with exposed tattoos...I think it's because in certain situations, you want sanitary..you want clean .. and heavily inked skin doesn't appear clean.... however.. these days I'll take a heavily tattood person providing my healthcare or food services over those stretched ear lobe nasties anyday! .. that really makes my stomach turn. .. after saying that ..I'm 63 and several of our similar aged friends and family have tattoos but they all wish now that they hadn't had them as they don't look quite as good on wrinkly skin
D'you think employers have a right to not hire/promote folks based on how they look? my opinion is that it depends on the job.. I mean an obese receptionist isn't a good look for a fitness clinic.. I get that but what about a tattooed financial adviser, would the tats make you think about bikie gangs or excons?

How I miss those great Sat nights at the Palais or the Maison in UK when I was a teen before joining the WRAF......dancing to all those great Bands, Johnny Dankworth with Cleo Laine, etc..........turned em all into Bongo halls I believe and that was the start of the people becoming fat.....................

Buy a printed tee-shirt from a market stall and wear it for the next 50 years.

Or get a tattoo.

Same difference.

Phil

You can always take the T-shirt off

What about the question ... would you employ a person looking like this ( or dreadlocked.... obvious tattos.  bum-crack showing pants) as a front person in your business ? .. assuming your business is not catering specifically for this look!

No,, the front person reflects on the first impression gained of the whole business, also when/if someone turns up to an interview without even trying to meet expected standards, I know I have immediately thought if you can't be bothered now to bother to dress properly what will you be like once employed. Some one really want a job would tone it down.

Yes and I agree Vivity.. what made me ask was a bit in yesterdays paper where employers are being accused of discrimination against people with this 'look' instead of assessing their ability for the work entailed.. I s'pose if it's a warehouse or some similar environment where the general public don't have access it may not matter ..imo an business owner should be able to hire whoever he wants but if that employee decides to go for a 'feral' image later on then he/she can be dismissed for not adhering to the standards which acquired him/her the job in the first place.. you agree?

Yes I agree but they would probably need 3 warnings if they are over a normal 3 month trial and uniforms are good, one persons idea of acceptable clothes can be quite...... Unacceptable. Ha d one who waited until 3 months were up then suddenly into vest type tops, plunging necklines and no Bra and mini skirts some of the men were in danger of having heart attacks!!!
