Eat, Fast and Live Longer

Eat, Fast and Live Longer

Is a documentary I saw on the SBS last week

http://www.sbs.com.au/documentary/program/1196/

From trying out variations of diets he found that he could achive good results by eating a normal diet on 5 days and fasting on 500 calories on 2 days.

Over 5 weeks Dr Mosley reduced his glucose levels, cholesterol,

increased his brain activity and had weight loss.

I've read that older people get better results from this diet than younger people but I have several young family members who have achieved outstanding results on this diet re weight loss and lower cholesterol levels.

Thanks for the info about the members of your family and the reduction weight and cholesterol levels.

It usually takes me about 10 - 15 minutes for me to finish a meal, unless dining in a restaurant or with friends.

This is dangerouse nonsense

There is scientific evidence and a lot of research done on it http://abcnews.go.com/Health/feast-famine-controversial-fast-diet-weight-loss-plan/story?id=18613821

I fail to see how on 2 days a week of restricing your diet to 500 calories is dangerous if there are benefits of reducing your blood sugar, cholesterol, weight and improve your brain function.

Some people may unnecessarily taking a lot of pills which they may not have to.

Further is you look at the muslim diet, they do fasting of 2 days a week on a regular basis.

All diets are nonsense . The only way to improve you health is to take in less calories than you burn . It is not diets but a life style that is important and the only proven method of improving your health is to restrict the calories you eat.with moderate excercise .

This works on restriction of calories. If your diet is on 2000 calories and you reduce to 500 calories on 2 days then you are reducing your intake by 3000 calories a week.

Further it tricks the body into burning excess fat calories from your body.

Thanks for putting that up Abby, looks very interesting way of weekly calorie control without constant obsessing on calorie counting, and has the overall effect of lowering cholesterol/ sugar intake. Guess ancient huntsmen did the same fasting when hunting and then enjoying the spoils for a few days then off to the hunt again when the spoils ran out.

Ancient huntsmen did not live much past 30

Wasn't heart attacks/strokes that killed them either, their diet was probably much better than ours regardless.

Rather than stressing your body with fasting for two days a week , where you are train g your body to store food for a famine, doesn't it make more sense to follow a calorie reduced but nutriciouse regime daily.

The body gets used to the regular diet and after a couple of weeks no longer works.

If it reduces blood sugar levels and cholesterol levels I think it is a good thing that people do not have to take chemicals for this purpose.

The modern diet is not natural to the body.

Rubbish. Eat a balanced meal and ensure that calories in = calories burned to maintain BMI within acceptable tolerance

Avoid or minimise intake of unhealthy foods.

Oh and a good drop of red every other day helps as well.

In a few decades when you are a senior - perhaps you may view the situation differently.

You only have to google or go to the site I gave Twila to see the tremendouse amount of work done on calorie restriction . It is the only known method so far of extending the healthy period of your life.

Pete how often do people over indulge at one celebratory meal and say I will have to cut back tomorrow? It's a case of what suits one may not suit all, seems like there was a pretty thorough scientific research into this method described on the video. Personally I would prefer this method, each to their own especially if good results are achieved.

Depends on the results you want to achieve the results from a calorie restricted diet which do not involve binge eating and fasting have results of longer priod of healthy part of your life and may extend life.

There have been many fad diets but none result in long term health benefits. . The longest living people the Okikawans seem to follow a natural calorie restricted diet as do the peasants of Sicily .

This diet allows you to have normal meals on 5 days and 2 non consecutive days on of 500 calories.

There are many different ways to eat your 500 calories on your fast days. You can split the calories over breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks or you could simply opt to eat breakfast/lunch and dinner or just one main meal and some snacks

The 500 calorie day

Looking at this the fast days do not look so bad and give you good ideas

The secret to it as I see it is to plan your meals for those 2 days.
