100,000 Bats die in Queensland Heatwave

I don't know anything about Bats we do not have them over here in WA as in the Eastern States, but they must serve a function in ecology and the food chain.

Anyone like to enlighten me? The following link is an ABC report and video.

Vivity, I prefer to call them Flying Foxes. They are very important to the environment. Better than me trying to explain I suggest you have a look at http://www.ehp.qld.gov.au/wildlife/livingwith/flyingfoxes/importance.html

Also http://www.environment.gov.au/node/16394 which explains the different types of Flying Foxes and their distribution.

Only a 100,000, what a crying shame..!!

Saw something on TV last night. Each bat eats 2 kgs of fruit a night.  That's a lot of fruit for a small creature.

Unfortunately they were eating mangoes too.  Maybe they were pics of  bats eating yours Gerry.
