LET'S HAVE SOME FUN

If you had the opportunity to meet a historical figure whom would you choose and why? What would you ask him/her? To get the ball rolling: I don't subscribe to any particular religion, but I do believe there is some magnificent force in the driving seat. Throughout the ages there have been many conductors but the one who intrigues me the most is Jesus..not for any religions reasons..just simply because unlike any other in history, he has been able to influence so many without going into battle or hurting one hair of anyone's head. I would like to ask him how he did it..and while I'm at it I hope he would share with me how he turned water into wine!!

I would like to sit at the feet of the Ancient Greek philosophers who set western culture in place .. But Alexander would have to be the one I would choose who spread Greek culture to the world .

Alexander III of Macedon, commonly known as Alexander the Great (Greek: ?λ?ξανδρος ? Μ?γας), was a king of Macedon, a state in northern ancient Greece. Born in Pella, Greece in 356 BC, Alexander was tutored by Aristotle until the age of 16. By the age of thirty, he had created one of the largest empires of the ancient world, stretching from the Ionian Sea to the Himalayas. He was undefeated in battle, and is considered one of history’s most successful commanders.

Love your choice Pete..but would you have a specific question for him??

Yes I want to know what motivated him ..

Didn't he weep because he had no more lands to conquer?  I think that was his motivation.  He saw the world as his oyster.

I love this quote from Alexander

"Are you still to learn that the end and perfection of our victories is to avoid the vices and infirmities of those whom we subdue?

The fact that he was tutored by Aristotle I find fascinating . I wonder if the world would have developed much earlier if we had not lost all the advances of the Greeks . It is amazing the knowlege they had . They knew the world was a sphere and the sun was at the centre . They invented complex mathematics . They worked out atoms . They practised democracy . Yet we lost all this for 2000 years .Why ?

Aleander conquered the more advanced part of the world imagine if he had gone North he would have conquered savages ...

some say, it was because of their decadence...orgies, open homoxesuality, bisexuality etc...

bit like the us and europe today really...

'They practised democracy'.

Yeah well Pete my understanding of Ancient Greece is that their practise of democracy was pretty restrictive....limited mainly to male citizens which to my understanding again required  a fairly strict criteria for those allowed to be counted amongst its citizenry.  Also understand women, slaves, freed slaves, aliens and of course children were excluded from the democratic process.

Which in reality makes the democracy of Ancient Greece seem like not much more than a club for wealthy male adults - a powerful minority -  who made the rules that the majority of its population had no say in but had to abide by.

Yes as SS says

bit like the us and europe today really...

Yes but look at the rest of the world at the time . We are talking about the Bronze Age. Tribal societies . The Phoniciens and the Greeks had formed advanced city states . They were all different yet so advanced .the Phoniciens were as semetic race. I wonder where were the Jews at the time.maybe slaves in Egypt..

I was just thinking how nice it would be to have chat with Solomon over dinner with a bottle of wine and absorb some of his wisdom. :)

Dinks :) ?

".and while I'm at it I hope he would share with me how he turned water into wine!!"

I thought you could already do that ??? Here I am being nice to you hoping you might share the recipe...... only to find out that you are still in plans of acquiring it ???

What can I say Abby..this wine thing plays on my mind...when I break the code will certainly give you the recipe. You mean you would sit at the feet of our Solly..my, you are fond of him!!

I turn wine into water regularly..

HaHaah! good one Pete

Darling Dinks

For a moment I doubted you and thought you were holding out on me but now that you've explained ..... when you break the code I will too sit at your feet, wash them with my tears of joy and gently dry them with my golden locks of hair.

Wonder if there is a way to reverse Pete's Process ??? There may be money in it...... Do not let $eth see this, he seems to get a little insecure when I mention money making projects.

Just one more thing I do wish you would stop refering to the Sublime Solomon as Solly ..... It is just so disrespectful.

I cannot think of any truly historical figure but three writers I would like to spend a few hours with would be, Tom Collins, Henry Lawson and John Stienbeck.

SD

SD..Steinbeck is also one of my favourite writers, love all the works of Henry Lawson!

I would love to meet and talk with my ancestors. My grandparents had left this world when I was born (comes from being a "change of life baby" I guess lol.

Would be fantastic to meet great grandparents along with grandparents. I am sure they could have been famous historical folk Dinks :)

You never know Phyl..perhaps your ancestors are as you say.  I believe that all our ancestors are historical because they are our individual histories. So when I say historical figure, the people we decended from most certainly fall into that category.

Phyl,

Yes I would love to have a chat to my Grandfather. He was about when I was very young but a face to face as an adult could have answered a lot of questions.

Take it easy.

SD

i have turned water imto wine so many times i forget how many

5 litres grape, juice, 2kgs sugar, wood chips, wine yeast.

then its all,in the technique

Ancestors was my first thought when this thread went up but I thought the mightn't count. They would be my first choice.

They sure do count Robi...see post to Phyl..10.49 am.

Come on guys, I enjoyed the discussion based on Pete's choice, but let's hear yours...

Abby: the wine's already gone to your head and I haven't even given you the recipe, tut tut.

Dinks we already did a similar one to this one last year so I guess it will be of more interest to newer members.

Thanks for that Vivity..ah well..will have to think of something else another time. In the meantime keep having fun!! Cheers.
