Court suppression order

WikiLeaks has struck again, releasing the text of a secret court order that cannot be published in Australia.
The anti-secrecy group has this morning published a Victorian Supreme Court suppression order that WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange describes as “unprecedented” in scope.
The suppression order is itself suppressed. No Australian media organisation can legally publish the document or its contents.
In a statement provided to Fairfax Media, Assange said it was “completely egregious to block the public's right to know and suppress the media in any instance, and especially in cases of international corruption involving politicians and subsidiaries of a public organisation”.

Operation sovereign borders has been a ripper of a succeess and saved many lives,,why should we reveal to people smugglers our methods ..they are the enemy..,

why would we want to embarres our neighbours. If they have been caught in corruption .that is a matter for their governments as corruption here is ours.,,

of course we should protect our own agents anonominity.

Dorian

The corruption , alleged is here so the crime is here . The cover up is here .

Got any details?

Dorian

That would require me to break the law . Unlike Pickering or sex abuse priests I do not knowingly break the law .

It is called "Operation tell ém nothing" You know - can't have the people knowing what goes on - matter of national secrecy.

Havn't figured out who is attacking us yet tho.

More operation keep them in the dark

The Immigration Department told the independent health provider on Christmas Island not to publish a report that showed alarming rates of mental health issues among children in detention, an inquiry has heard.
During the third hearing of the inquiry into children in detention, Dr Peter Young revealed that the department had explicitly told International Health and Medical Services not to publish a report showing children in detention suffered very high levels of mental illness because of the harsh environment.

naughty reserve bank.  they're at it again!  and thanks to wikileaks for providing the transparency that our government lacks.

"australia bans the reporting of multi-nation corruption case involving malaysia, indonesia and vietnam.

today, 29 july 2014, wikileaks releases an unprecedented australian censorship order concerning a multi-million dollar corruption case explicitly naming the current and past heads of state of indonesia, malaysia and vietnam, their relatives and other senior officials. the super-injunction invokes “national security” grounds to prevent reporting about the case, by anyone, in order to “prevent damage to australia's international relations”.

the court-issued gag order follows the secret 19 june 2014 indictment of seven senior executives from subsidiaries of australia's central bank, the reserve bank of australia (rba). the case concerns allegations of multi-million dollar inducements made by agents of the rba subsidiaries securency and note printing australia in order to secure contracts for the supply of australian-style polymer bank notes to the governments of malaysia, indonesia, vietnam and other countries.”

didn't tony abbott promise 'transparency' – or was it only a core promise – before the election?

So Australia has dealt with its own cases of wrong doing but did not want to publise foreign nationals as that is their governments responsibility and our interference would damage relations . Very sensible decision of the labor govt until  Australias interest damaged by a man wanted in Sweden on sex crimes..but is hiding from arrest.

oh pete, that man you say is hiding. - the uk government is spending millions of $ on him - must consider him important

He is hiding in the Bolivan embassy in London . From Swedish police where he is wanted on sex crime allegations.Maybe what Rolph should have done.

i would like to have the full details of any corruption performed by the reserve bank of australia.  so would the president of indonesia.

we do have the right to know what our leading institutions have been up to, especially when it affects our close nation-neighbours.

secrecy can be very damaging indeed.

If this gag order isnt dropped through public outcry and objections from journalists and media, I have real concerns for our freedom of the press in future. ANYTHING that is damaging or embarrassing to the government could be censored in "the national interest".  Journo's and the media must be allowed to report the NEWS, otherwise we may as well go and live in Russia or wherever else the news is censored and manipulated by government. Are we led by Kim Jong Abbott?

At the same time you want the government to protect us from Terrorist and wouldn't mind paying more tax to do so . How do you suggest they do if not by clandestine activities ...

I personally find Assange an odorous little man.

The revelations from wikileaks were not surprising at all.

What I did find surprising, was that people were surprised.

London Review of Books  Winter Lectures: " Andrew O'Hagan:  Ghosting Julian Assange"

O'Hagan was contracted as a ghost writer for Assange and provides his insights into this man.  I think are spot on; definitely fill out the character of Assange as I suspected.  It is a fairly long read, but well worth it.

Every country has restrictions on what can be made public and what can't.

It is naive to believe otherwise.

There is neither total freedom of speech, nor total freedom of the press anywhere.

The ham fisted approach has created more publicity than if the the govt just allowed normal court procedure to take its course . Most of the allegations had already been aired a while ago in some form or other in the media before the gag was applied . An own goal .

You seem very confused you support wiki leaks releasing information damaging to Australias interest then somehow make out this is the Australian Govts fault.

No confusion Damian . Once again you display your poor comprehension of English . Quitye clearly I put the view that without the suppression order there would be less publicity . I did not mention wikleaks at all . You just never learn do you ? A true dyed in the wool Abbottophile . No cure unfortunately , education or training of no use . As I opined a few hours ago your character flaws mean you are going to repeat offend again . A recidivist .

One thing about you , you never disappoint in being disappointing in your posts .

Clearly you are bankers.0if you haven't mentioned wiki leaks what us the first line of your thread all about . Wiki leaks has struck again .

Dorian , Dorian , poor poor Dorian . How can you be so moronic ? Not a term I like using at any time but I can think of none more apt in this instance .

I was talking about my post that you responded to as regards wiki , no confusion there . Here is once again you display your lack of or wilful character flaws . The wikileak comment is a part of an article which any fool with a basic understanding of forums or threads would know by the web address underneath .

You once again falsely say I wrote something that is the work of someone else . In this case a journalist . To quote Shawshank Redemption Are you deliberately being obtuse ? Truly moronic .

Night Dorian , you are not worth wasting time on . I have wasted too much time already . Have a cuppa or a slug of your preferred rot gut . Stop embarrassing yourself .

Once again like your disgusting comment about the PM you post something and then say oh no it's not me . I post things I don't agree with .

Crikey paywall

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade had argued for the injunction in June, claiming that national security and international relations could be affected by revelation of details relating to the case, involving bribery of political figures. The massive attention paid to the injunction after it was revealed by WikiLeaks has ensured that DFAT’s rationale has been completely undermined, particularly with regional publications revealing the names of local figures suppressed by the order, producing the very consequence DFAT had sought to prevent. The case involves bribery claims relating to the production of Australian plastic currency banknotes.

DFAT’s effort to gag the media is another example of the current government’s willingness to use international relations and national security as a means of avoiding scrutiny of officials’ behaviour. The head of the government’s anti-asylum seeker activities, General Angus Campbell, has relied heavily on avoiding “undermining regional relationships” as a justification for withholding a wide range of information about “Operation Sovereign Borders” from parliamentary committees and the media. Attorney-General George Brandis has also invoked national security as a pretext for avoiding scrutiny on ASIO’s raid on a whistleblower who revealed Australia spied on the East Timorese cabinet, even after evidence emerged that directly contradicted the claims of the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security’s claims about the matter.
