We know the current theory Is that depression is a chemical imbalance and can be cured by the taking of a drug over five yesrs..,we are not talking about Bi polar .,,

howevet their are now new theories being tested out .

IMO phycologists have never cured anyone of anything?

Pete ever heard of psychology  being used to help people with Phobias apparently quite successfully  or helping after traumatic incidents to cope? There is a place for psychology  IMO.

Abby, I do not think you are quite understanding the true meaning of    "The Black Dog" but you are no different to so many people who take it lightly, but those needing help "do not find anything about it to laugh about"

The main thing is for people who are deeply in the clutches of it, or maybe better still in it's early days, get help and talk to people who have actually been there.

Freezing here today.

If one has never suffered from clinical depression then they probably google to make out they know all about it so they can post here.

Those who have been there generally do not need to write reams, they know exactly what depression is and that it can affect different people in different ways.

The term "Black dog" is fitting. I thought of it as being down a big black hole and not being able to crawl to the top to see daylight.

Agree

Gerry I don't know why you are so cynical . This site is useful for us to swap information . For instance Phyll doctor advised her that blood tests in her case were not neccesary that view has been superceded by new recommendations that they are essential and I told Phyll of my view.

in the case of Depression I have been taking for the last three years citalopram 20mg on advise . As the current belief is that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance .  There is new research that suggests that inflation is the cause of many diseases including depression and I put up that research for anyone interested.

In the case of CLL which I have but at a low level there is no treatment but new findings after many years of research has reached the point of being approved by the FTA ...

I understand this much Phyl :)

The Black Dog is a pathetic WHO anology of people trying to blame as per usual poor animals for people's problems.

Well they are not and if anything cats and dogs are are the most helpful understanding creatures to the people with depression and are often the only genuine help they receive - a vast improvement on the empty human chatter of wailing and crying with the individual who have need to lighten up if anything ..

I feel sure Sandi did not put up the post to have some sort of morbid discusion in depression. So I cannot see a problem in putting some levity in the subject which I manage to put in most topics, nor do I apologise discussing current reseach into the topic.

Gerry :)

The discussion on the research being done into depression has basically been covered by a 2 Part Series by the Catalyst which if it had not been for your op you possibly may have been watching.

It is called Gut Reaction and you will be able to find the first episode on this link http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/4067184.htm

The research shows how the food we eat creates gut microbes which cause inflammation in our gut that affect the immune system, the metabolic and the nervous system.

The research suggests the food we consume may be contributing to depression, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, cancer, asthma, allergies, arthritis, autism,  diabetes etc.

Both episodes are well worth while watching to see the whole picture.

Abby I call it "the Black Fog" Gerry said "Black Hole" but "the Black Dog" is used by many including:-

The Black Dog Institute....which is a world leader in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mood disorders such as depression, but other organisations also.

I read somewhere Sir Winston Churchill called it "the Black Dog" which was always beside him, due to his Dark Depression. You  can Google it Abby.

Whatever it is called, I thank Sandi, as many others surely will, for putting the topic forward for those wanting to discuss it, or try to help anyone going through Deep Depression.

The fact you have a good laugh is your perogative.

Yes Phyl :)

I am aware that analogy is used by many but to my way of thinking it does not make it right.

People in deep depression need help from a psychiatrist.

Hey! how did you make that orange ???

It's a very old English/Celtic saying hasn't got anything to do with today's domestic dogs Abby you might not like it but for the English it traditionally is descriptive. I can remember my Grandmother using it.

Gerry I remember my sister saying almost the same as you about the black tunnel, the light had gone out and there was no where left,  she was finally diagnosed with Endogenous Depression in the early 1960s in her early 20s and was desperate and brave enough to undertake ECT when offered and spent her life on a progression of different medications. The hardest and bravest thing I think is to take those first steps when needing help.

I felt like hitting someone who once said to her to toughen up - they had no idea how tough life was for her with a depressive illness and how brave she really was.

It's raining cats and dogs here. Black ones white ones spotted ones ...

ive got my baseball out

 @ Solomon.
