G'day more advise please - about AMBULANCE

G'day

we have always been subscribers to Melbourne Ambulance Service but last year - because we paid late - we were called "new members" and needed to wait before we could use an ambulance even after having paid sence Adam was and egg.

Because we are in our seventies we are told that membership is not necessary but its only $80 BUT do you think it is necessary - are you a member and if so why - are pensioners only covered in their home state for example.

Have asked but given such different stories wonder if you have any real experience in that area.

Our HBA refunded the cost for a time but now its Bupa they dont

Would value your opinions as ever

kind regards

Peter I pay extra $80.00 per year for ambulance cover following advice from a friend with experience of needing them with a very sick daughter. In an emergency we are covered but apparently if they arrive and we say it is no longer necessary we can be charged around $800 BUT if they tell us on arrival it is not necessary we are not charged so leave the decision to the Ambos.

Also HBF covers the non-emergency transfers between hospitals or home to a hospital for treatment where an ambulance is the best mode of transport for someone with a non emergency condition.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Vivity - will pay cos we would get a grumpy one for sure

Really?  I was under the impression that if you were on any kind of pension and over the age of 65 - the Ambulance was free in the State of Vic.???  (Don't know about other States?) ....

Foxy

Thats my impression as well. When I called 000 and they sent an ambulance to me there was no charge. Ambulance took me to hospital for slipped disc as walking was impossible. Electric volt type pain from foot to buttock as I placed any pressure on right foot. Thankfully it dissipated by itself after three days or so.

Also in Victoria

That was my impression too in NSW.

also in Qld

Glad that we have cover as there are many circumstances where "free ambulance" is not free to pensioners  such as being transfered from a public to private hospital -

we just discovered this  as well as the info on the Bupa site above.

Just an aside - Adam was never an egg !

Government services often try it on and give you a bill but you tell them that you are a pensioner a therefore free. Just don't pay it and nothing will happen.

Peter, when my mother-in-law was transferred by air ambulance from a hospital in Sydney to a nursing home in the country it didn't cost her anything. At first they were going to send her all the way by road ambulance - over 800 Klms - and that too would have been free but they changed it to air ambulance.
