Naming and showing faces of alleged offenders.

At 6 a.m. I watched the Today Show news.

On it they showed the faces and named those who have just been arrested in a 40 year old murder of a Ms McCulkin and her two daughers.

(Vincent O’Dempsey, 76, from Warwick in southeast Queensland, and Gary Dubois, 67, of Torbanlea near Hervey Bay, will appear in court this morning on charges of murder, three counts each of deprivation of liberty, plus two other charges.)  I obtained this information off the internet.

At 7 a.m. I watch the Sunrise Show and they had a segment on this subject but said they could not (due to legal reasons) show their faces or name them and they had the faces greyed out.

So what is going on??  This is not the first time I have noticed this happening.

Is it one rule for one tv station and one for another??  If against the law to name or show faces of alleged offenders surely the law should come down on the TV/radio stations who do this?

Yes - have noticed this on quite a few occasions - bizarre!

I think the rule might be that you can't identify by photo in the person's home state.

We had a chap charged (MP) here and we couldn't see his photo but friend's sent me copies from a news source they had in NSW.

Either way it's ridiculous especially with the internet these days as overseas news posts it there.

Not allowed to in home state in case it affects jurors minds on accused before and during trail. I believe that is the reason.

In that case BW it looks as if yet another law is out of step with modern technology as can be seen in Gerry's link which means it the picture is available everywhere.

No one ALLEGED of anything should be persecuted...
