Generics again - and at last maybe now those who risk their health

will not only stop using these doubtful medicines and stick to those whose human trials show their efficacy. And then maybe we will stop having to pay a levy for what is first class meds.

Also a move afoot by the Generic industry to try to get the government to lower the co payment on generics but still keep the levy as seem at last too many Aussies have stopped taking them, slow learners here, but in the end it does get through. Only have to see governments. still not got through that when we lowered the tariffs or Labor did keeping only 5% on cars, the rest having agreed just went long as usual with tariffs and even today with a FTA Japan still has 34% on our beef to protect their farmers. So we are slow learning are we not?

Generics mainly made by one Indian company and lots of these imported here still today but banned in USA and Canada. And what was our PM saying re Canada, we are alike? Well not quite eh.

I only have concerns for people not for the companies and their bloody profits off our health.  We only get one body and should look after it and remember to be careful what we put into our mouths as we are what we eat.

And Abbott was Health Minister who approved using generics and that is one reason why I dont trust his judgement. Still dont. Even more today but dont want Julie Bishop next PM as rumoured and why. Well see she played politics over Scott Morrison maybe getting a Homeland Security Dept and that means she loses a bot of her portfolio. Now in the public interest ministers losing bits of their portfolio's when not losing usual concenr money, makes for poor judgement of why they got elected. To serve the people and do their best for the public good and that is what Judges forget today too in sentencing too busy on their agenda which is they should set the law and be above it of course, not the Parliament.

All forget we pay their imo exhorbitant wages and perks.

And do kid yurselves today all that counts is the profits and no party seems to be other than in bed with big business these days even Geomac's and other rusted on's beloved Labor Party which is why it isnt the party of the people since it took donations from them. Cant serve 2 masters, employer and employee.

And why Unions are down to so few members that I wonder how they can pay their own most likely OTT wages.

You must have loved Gough Whitlam then Val, since he governed for the people first and foremost.

Really bit of a stupid comment.  Best you could do?

But then didnt expect much else.

Looks like you have been insulted Robi.

Much like val's snide comment "even Geomac's and other rusted on's beloved Labor Party "

Pity so called adults have to resort to these kind of tactics on a discussion forum.

I think people know we have used Generic Meds. for a long time.

No problens, so everyone has to make up their own mind :)

Never used generics myself but one has to be careful as the ingredients in generics may not match the real drug. Like you Phyl I know people in Australia who use them and are ok, however I wouldn't buy them online as some do.

A couple of Pharmacists have assured us "The Ingredient Prescribed" IS in the Generic and all exactly the same in that part of the prescription. Do people believe all Ingredients are from Australia in the one prescribed? If so, we would happily revert to the original rather than Generics. Have to say I do not think so. Good to talk about it and most things, so we can be educated , informed or find we are doing the right thing.

We are not pedantic and enjoy hearing how others feel.

What Are Generic Drugs?

A generic drug is identical--or bioequivalent--to a brand name drug in dosage form, safety, strength, route of administration, quality, performance characteristics and intended use. Although generic drugs are chemically identical to their branded counterparts, they are typically sold at substantial discounts from the branded price. According to the Congressional Budget Office, generic drugs save consumers an estimated $8 to $10 billion a year at retail pharmacies. Even more billions are saved when hospitals use generics.

Drug companies must submit an abbreviated new drug application (ANDA) for approval to market a generic product. The Drug Price Competition and Patent Term Restoration Act of 1984, more commonly known as the Hatch-Waxman Act, made ANDAs possible by creating a compromise in the drug industry. Generic drug companies gained greater access to the market for prescription drugs, and innovator companies gained restoration of patent life of their products lost during FDA's approval process.

New drugs, like other new products, are developed under patent protection. The patent protects the investment in the drug's development by giving the company the sole right to sell the drug while the patent is in effect. When patents or other periods of exclusivity expire, manufacturers can apply to the FDA to sell generic versions.

Health professionals and consumers can be assured that FDA approved generic drugs have met the same rigid standards as the innovator drug. To gain FDA approval, a generic drug must:

contain the same active ingredients as the innovator drug(inactive ingredients may vary)
be identical in strength, dosage form, and route of administration
have the same use indications
be bioequivalent
meet the same batch requirements for identity, strength, purity, and quality
be manufactured under the same strict standards of FDA's good manufacturing practice regulations required for innovator products
