Charities

I volunteer for a couple of charities. They're doing it a bit tough at the moment. It's got to the stage where they're phoning each other, asking if the have a bed, a lounge chair or a whatever, which they could give to someone. The place I went to this morning doesn't have one double bed in the whole place for sale, let alone one which they could donate. I've noticed the drop off of the donated goods for a couple of months now. Seems like the recession is biting fairly deeply. People are simply hanging on to what they have - not replacing it. I do think it will become a bit worse, before it gets better.

Bev, I'm not sure where you live but if you check out this site

it's for Freecyclers giving away goods. http://au.groups.yahoo.com/search?query=RECYCLE+AUSTRALIA&sort;=relevance

I belong to the Adelaide Freecycle Group and often pick up free things for people in need..

When you go into the site just put the area where you live or the state and it will show the closest ones to you

when i bought a new bed i rang a couple of charities to ask if the like my old bed which was very clean and in good condition,i waited and waited for them to collect but they didn't so i put it on freecycle that sandikay mentioned and it went in 30mins

Thank you Sandikay - I volunteer for a charity - it wasn't for myself, but for others. Our area is a tourist destination - mostly lower paid workers, who rent. When their houses went under, they were'nt insured - they couldn't afford to, when their job is either casual or part time, and they pay half their income for rent. It has been difficult to help those who need help. We've been able to give them clothes, but furniture is another matter. Our own warehouse went under in the deluge - so much had to go to the tip - it was beyond redemption or repair. I've given what I can - mainly, my time.
