obesity
The European Union's highest court has ruled that obesity can be considered a "disability" if it hinders the overweight person's performance at work.
The European Court of Justice had been asked by a Danish court to consider the case of a child minder in Denmark who said he was fired four years ago because he is obese.
The employee, Karsten Kaltoft, filed a suit to obtain damages and interests from the municipality of Billund who employed him as a child minder, claiming he was the victim of discrimination. abc
Obesity is a grave problem and it leads to other major health issues all of which are a drain on our medical faciliites. The obese are effectively euthenasing themselves, anyway.
Obesity doesn't occur over-night, and I suspect most would have attempted dieting at some stage. The diet industry is massive not only in this country, but overseas as well. One only has to look at the ever growing list of diet books, potions, chemist programs, organisations, etc. to see how seriously people do take their weight ... which also indicates that for many it is a losing battle.
What are needed are multi-disciplinary and concentrated programs with dieticians, psychologists, trainers, gyms, etc. which cater to groups; perhaps including - for those already obese or getting there - "obese anonymous" similar to AA. These programs in tandem with individuals' doctors, could be set up by the government.
The cost of these programs would be far less than the cost to both the community and health system than the epidemic of obesity now seen.
Additionally, the information provided - which is often disparate to what we have been lead to believe - would become imbeded into the wider community.
