Something we can do for our selves and yet another threat to our back pocket and health if they stop us having true labeling of country of origin which could result.

Negotiations on an international treaty called the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement have been going on in complete secrecy for the last few years.

The TPP could impact on health initiatives, food labelling, the cost of medicines and copyright law. The negotiations are likely to finish soon, but the public has yet to see the agreement.

We need to know what's at stake in the TPP. That is why we are calling on the Federal Government to bring the Australian public to the table and release the text before signing a final agreement.

Good on you for recognising the TPP as something that is essentially BAD for Australia and GOOD for foreign megacorps.

I realise that we have differences of opinions politically but it is fantastic that when it comes to protecting Australia, from this backdoor invasion of foreign interests, that we all stand together!

I have put up another topic under General Discussion with another LINK because I am having trouble accessing your link.... could be my own internet system, as it is trying to upload info which takes a long time and slows down your whole system to a SNAILS pace.  Sheez, it is embarrassing that Australia's internet system is so pathetic AND that is with the Libs new and excessively costly NBN which is out of date all ready!

Put skids on TPP
Thanks, Peter Martin, for pointing out the pitfalls of signing the Trans Pacific Partnership agreement (Comment, 10/3).   Senator Elizabeth Warren, a possible Democrat nominee for the 2016 US presidential election, wrote recently in The Washington Post  that the only beneficiary would be  multinationals and that the agreement would undermine the sovereignty of nations via the "Investor-State Dispute Settlement" clause, a feature of TPP.

Warren cites examples of how companies use ISDS to harm nations: a French company sued Egypt because Egypt raised its minimum wage, and a Swedish company sued Germany because it decided to phase out nuclear power after the Fukushima disaster, while a Dutch company sued the Czech Republic because the Czechs didn't bail out a bank that the company partially owned. Philip Morris is trying to use ISDS to stop Uruguay from implementing regulations intended to cut smoking rates. Australians must insist the government put the skids on the TPP.

Done and signed

Thanks Jane

The others will just whinge and whine when it comes through but will not take action in people power to try to stop it.

Most free trade agreements deliver little in the way of benefits, apart from photo opportunities for politicians, but the highly secretive Trans-Pacific Partnership has the potential for real harm in Australia, writes Ian Verrender.

Geoff See that their argument re patents v reasearch has com down to free trade. That little description is a trouble maker.

Generic medicines came from patents not being extended leading to frre trade and third world medicines now being used in first world and not as efficient leading to anti biotic amongst the overuse and use buy agricutlure etc failure, and lack of research now by big Pharma. So Government wanting to set up and already paying for research into medicines. America got more people to pay for this than our poor few 23 million v 300+ million in the US of A.

So sign up or suffer again. As meds are one thing on the table again. And who loses out. Those who can least afford them. Elderly on pensions or limited incomes.

Dont bother to reply with usual = generics work for me = from those who cant resist as at long last I am backed by now other than Professor Karen Phelps ExAMA President and others too now, that anti biotics in particular are too weak in generics and that all of them lack efficacy in comparison with those which underwent human trials over a long period before being approved. Generics are approved on 1 active ingredient which does not have to be 1st grade either so rejects by 1st med makers plus fillers which can also make the generic act differently on some people. Not as effective actually pushes up cost of Medicare.Infection meds dont work, having paid for 1 GP visit plus pharmcist to dispence drug and its cost, then back you go as infection returns as it has been doing more often than not, and again another round of costs to Medicare. That alone spread over the whole populaton will push up costs and count for some of the huge hikes.

Avoid taking generics but in particular anti biotics. See not pushing them so hard so must have come to end of making more money off them than the real drugs.

Sadly Abby true - many here like to just argue rather than act. See the same ones as here now who do act. Rest mainly men I notice just sit back and argue their teams. As if footy rather that political which can mean the difference in being able to buy ones needs without having to pick which one cant have.

And these Trade agreements hold traps. they pat their own backs but look at what they have cost us in the past and by ALL parties.

Lowering Tariffs. Cost us manufacturing mainly.

Carbon Tax also more manufacturing went, as well as hiked prices and still waiting for this lot to do what they say get rid of RET which was largest hike here and most places in power which spread onto all prices.

Humanitarian increases. Far too many on welfare from day 1 but not allowed to actually know due to left wing and their letting more in always push push push for higher numbers at least this lot has cut down to 13,500 pa -Rudd let in over 600,000 in 2 years mainly Skilled but they pushed up house prices as well and in the mix were around 40,000 legal refugees and God knows how many illegals who left insists ar elegal even though smuggled in. But then they lie. And too many infested in Labor these days for good of working folk and Greens well nutjobs who only exist for trees and boat people like Triggs and her humanitarian crew. Even the new man from Coaltion has gone to the left. Must be catching eh.

We're not allowed to knowwho are on welfare and never worked a day here or paid income taxes and take take take. But demand more and get violent if not allowed. So that hasnt helped either.

Centrelink pays out to 10 million per month in payments.

We older folk some of whom are on the age pension are 2 million approx. The rest on SFR not counted unless of course the supplement only on CHS card but hasnt that ended now.

Who knows of people who rort the system as lots of tales and hints of it happening.
