Saudi Arabia to EXECUTE dad for voicing an opinion - YOU can save his life

Saudi Arabia is a controlled by a BRUTAL DICTATORSHIP, calling themselves Royalty.  There is no such thing as freedom of speech in this regime and the penalty for thinking and expressing an opinion is apparently 10 years in gaol and 1000 lashes BUT this may be upgraded to the death penalty.

Raif Badawi, voiced his opinion on a blog, just like this one and has been gaoled and lashed but it appears that he may now be executed for this heinous crime!?!

HERE is a LINK where you can sign a petition and save a life!

It takes two minutes ..... is someone's life worth 2 minutes of your time

If you think Indonesia is ROUGH on DRUGS..... Saudi Arabia is beyond belief - executing someone for expressing an opinion on a blog.  That is all of us gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hadn't even heard of Raif Badawi before so thanks Mussitate  for putting this post up.

However on doing a bit of reading up on the case realise this seems to be  a situation going from very bad - with his current brutal punishment being 10 years jail, a $300,000 fine, and 1,000 lashes devolving to the nighmarishly final outcome of his execution triggered by the possibility/probability of his retrial on the charge of 'Apostasy'  - but unsure at this stage if this retrial has yet actually taken place and that his execution is imminent.....but am open to further info on this decision.

But barbaric that someone who expresses an opinion should have to endure such punishments and of course he should be released immediately.....

Are we supposed to rise up in righteous indignation at every injustice in the world? While having sympathy for this guys plight, what are we supposed to do about it? Persoonally, I have my own problems in life.....and not enough time to deal with THOSE.

kfc - never "known" you to be this 'crabby"?  lol lol     :-)  Although must admit there are more and more of these atrocities surfacing thanks to today's technology......

kfchugo,

I am sorry that you don't have time to sign this petition.

I am also sorry that you problems are worse than Raif Badawi's.  Can we help?

Wow - news to me?  I knew he was receiving the lashes (which was bad enough!) but I had no idea it had progressed further than that??  I'll sign!!!  (It's a wonder nothing has come thru from change.org on this one?) They are usually up to speed with news like this?

I knew they had postponed the second lashing because he was in too bad a way and they were worried it "might" kill him?  No "good" news of late that's for sure!!

Mussitate,

I put a petition for Raif Badawi up on this forum some time ago when the conviction was 1,000  lashes and 10 years.

Thank you for bringing the situation up to the present.  Yes, I am certainly signing another petition for Raif Badawi.

Hey Twila

My attendance on the forum is spasmodic, so didn't see your previous partition BUT am really, really glad you are way ahead of me on this one.

I noticed that the Guardian gave negative media coverage to Iran (HEADLINE: Amid mass condemnation Iran have taken an eye for an eye, blinding a man who carried out an acid attack, his eye gouged out by doctors).  FIRSTLY, the person conducted an ACID attack on another person.... if you see the article, it shows the effect of someone who has had acid thrown over their face (horrific).  SECONDLY, doctors, do NOT gouge an eye out, they surgically remove it.  Agree, very severe way of dealing with it but if you see how many women (in particular) and men have acid thrown over their faces and the terrible results, it is probably a good time to introduce severe penalties (yes, we would deal with it differently, but if I had acid thrown on my face and I lost sight in one eye, I would agree fully with the person who purposefully threw the acid to also lose an eye (in the very least).

Goodness, the USA tortures people but we all turn away and say it is okay, for them to do it but obviously, if Iran or China did it, there would be an international hallaballoo.

The above Guardian headline was presented to show the DIFFERENT treatment/coverage our western media has of different countries. IRAN, no matter what they do, is BAD and Saudi Arabia which is a despotic country (especially against women), is NOT REPORTED ON AT ALL, it seems.

Again, Twila, am very glad we see eye to eye on this one.

Cheers

Mussitate,

As I understand it, Saudi Arabia is very "person grata" with the British royal family.

If I were a member of the British royal family, I wouldn't care about the "dollar" politics involved, but would distance myself from the regime as far away and as fast as I could ... and ensure it was public.  Perhaps by such actions, change might be possible.

Only by such actions writ large, will change occur.  Saudi Arabia is not going to give up its hallowed position with the West.

Mussitate...thank you for putting this up. We have always been supporters of Amnesty International and have already signed this petition. Will sign yours also and hope you don't mind my putting up Amnesty's link:
