Is Joe Hockey for real? or scaremongering.

He paints a real grim picture in 40 yrs time, with population growth from appr. 20m today to 40m.etc. and the changes that will happen

He tends to overlook the resilience of people, if Joe had presented a document like this in the 1920s amid a bad depression of 1929, the suicide rate would have risen sharply, In the next forty years our population doubled, by 1963 it was nearly 6m, look what happened!  our cities became full of skyscrapers, the growh was enormous,         Then another forty years, 1963 to 2003, IMO the governments of the states have not kept up with good infrasructure, IMO, the railways,     to keep more cars of the roads, easier for users to go to work.            I think the future is going to be great, something we cannot imagine today.

Some about Mike Baird

Yes I agree with you SD

People are just letting Governments run their lives and no longer able or willing to do things for themselves.

And as WD says there is no need for the overgovernance in such a small population when most of it is only but unnecessary duplication.

WD trying to think of Countries managed as you say - UK ? Still a top heavy Westminster?

Switzerland and Cantons?

have you other examples where there is not a 3 tiered Governance and that are not corrupt but successful.

The UK has four levels if you include the EU ....

The right want to devolve govt to the lowest levels and limit but not eliminate central govt . The right in the UK is winning over public opinion to repatriate decisions from Brussels to Westminister and devolve decisions from Westminster to Scotland Wales Northern Island and to encourage Mayors in Combining local Govt like London .

Suddenly remembered they also have Regional Management areas as well so that is another level.

Making massive Councils removes contact with the local communities and is rectrograde IMO. Fortunately that is something that has just been rejected in WA at the wishes of ratepayers who could see no advantage.

Section 51 of the Constitution  confers powers to the Commonwealth Parliament to only make laws in specified areas including defence, external affairs, interstate and international trade, taxation, foreign affairs, trading and financial corporations, marriage and divorce, immigration and interstate industrial conciliation and arbitration.

However the list of Commonwealth powers in the Constitution does not specifically refer to a number of important areas such as education, the environment, criminal law and roads etc.

However the Constitution does not confine the matters about which the States or Commonwealth can make laws, hence the duplication.

Yes the constitution was possibly ok when written however in 2015 it will not work as there too many laws that destroy it.

Duplication wastes billions each year and needs to be fixed.

No wonder we are in such a mess with the budget and bottom line.

How can Mr Hockey tell us what will happen in 40 years when he told the National Press Club in 2012: ‘‘Based on the numbers presented last Tuesday night we will achieve a surplus in our first year in office and we will achieve a surplus for every year of our first term.’’

He has done exactly the opposite to what he said then. Can't trust this lot , can we ?

Cannot even trust the next days weather forecast :)
