The best Christmas movies of all time

Font Size:

When it comes to ranking Christmas movies, it’s fair to say my skill set lies elsewhere, like, say, sitting on the couch and watching them back to back while I eat gingerbread. So, this year I’ve taken a little help from the team, asking the office for their personal favourite Chrissie movies.

Leon
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Chevy Chase is hilarious as Clark Griswold, who just wants to have a perfect family Christmas. Things quickly spiral out of control once his family get in on the act. This is a festive film for those who don’t mind their Christmas movies being a little more naughty than nice!

Kaye
Love Actually

I simply can’t go past Love Actually. From about 25 November I start humming All I want for Christmas (watch out Mariah) … by 2 Dec I’m thinking of Bill Nighy’s naughty gyrations to Christmas is All Around and then there’s Hugh Grant doing dad dancing down the stairs at No 10 Downing street to Jump. Seriously – is there a better feelgood movie on Christmas Eve than this?

*Best consumed with a bunch of girlfriends or daughters and Aperol Spritz.

Die Hard

The greatest Christmas story ever told.

Well I’m a bit of a sucker for Christmas movies, so I have many favourites.

I love Fred Claus. Vince Vaughn plays Santa’s older brother who lands up in jail for stealing. Santa, of course, bails him out as long as he comes to the North Pole to help make Christmas presents. It’s funny with the obligatory ‘feel good’ ending.

My grown-up favourite is Love Actually, because it’s funny, sad and heartwarming. It also has an impressive list of actors, which makes it very easy to watch.

My alternative favourite is Stalking Santa, which I bought unknowingly from a DVD shop that was closing down. It is a ‘mocumentary’ about Dr Lloyd Darrow and his intern Clarence gathering evidence to prove that Santa exists. You probably won’t find this DVD anyway, but it’s very funny.

It’s a Wonderful Life

George Bailey, played by James Stewart, is on the brink of suicide when he is visited by an angel who shows him the true meaning of life. If any classic Christmas movie is worthy of an annual screening, this is it.

Home Alone

Who wouldn’t enjoy the feel-good slapstick comedy about a boy who, when forgotten by his entire family of over the Christmas break, must defend his family home against two clueless robbers?

Now, according to the professionals, we have it all wrong. Rotten tomatoes, who adds up the number of positive or negative reviews from professional movie critics, has have compiled this list of the top 10 Christmas movies of all time. Do you agree with us or the pros?

  1. It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
  2. Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)
  3. Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
  4. The Shop around the Corner (1940)
  5. Holiday Inn (1942)
  6. Babes in Toyland (1934)
  7. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
  8. How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1967)
  9. Carol (2015)
  10. Remember the Night (1940)
