The Federal Government yesterday signed off on Australia Post’s plans to reduce the number of daily mail services, unless a premium for such is paid.
The changes are as follows:
- The regular, and cheapest, option for sending a letter will see mail take two days longer than the current timetable, which depends on your location. The service fee will also rise from 70 cents to $1.
- A priority mail service will be introduced for customers who require a faster delivery service. Again, no price for this service has been set but it is expected to be around $1.50 to $2.
- Express Post will remain as is.
- The price for concession stamps will remain at 60 cents, but will be subject to longer delivery times.
- The cost of sending a Christmas card will remain at 65 cents, but again, will take longer to be delivered.
The changes to the Basic Postage Rate will be reviewed and overseen by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). Once agreed, this will set the benchmark to establish the fee for the Priority Service.
