Cooking Apple Pancakes with Captain Arjen

Kaye has been gallivanting around Alaska all in the name of ‘work’, but it seems that Captain Arjen has other ideas

Last time I cruised with Holland America, I was highly excited when an invite to the Captain’s cocktail party was delivered to my cabin. Somehow I had imagined it would be a chance to have a chat and get to know more about this handsome man in his crisp white uniform, gold and navy epaulettes resting heavily on his shoulders.

As I shuffled past him, behind one of his other 300 ‘best friends’, I soon realised this was not my chance to add a cruise ship captain as a friend on Facebook. But this cruise to Alaska has delivered a different captain—and one with a very special skill. It’s all to do with his Dutch origins, for Captain Arjen C. van der Loo hails from Nieuwer-Amstel near Amsterdam. A captain with Holland America since 2003, Captain van der Loo’s special skill is cooking Apple Pancakes.

And imagine the delight of passengers when he hit the Culinary Arts Centre to give a demonstration of his famous recipe. While he was cooking up a storm, he shared tales of life at sea and how he came to be a master mariner in the first place.

Read on for the secret to perfect Dutch Apple Pancakes.
