In recent times, the state of Victoria has seen a worrying surge in car-related crimes, with number plate thefts hitting record highs. This alarming trend has sparked a call to action from the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV), urging for a significant change in the way we secure our vehicles’ identity—through the mandatory use of anti-theft screws on number plates.
Last year alone, Victoria experienced a staggering 27,466 instances of number plate theft, marking a 45.8 per cent increase from the previous year. This figure represents more than a third of all thefts from motor vehicles in the state, which totalled 75,731. To put this into perspective, that’s an average of 75 number plates being stolen every single day, a statistic that should have every car owner on high alert.
The RACV has put forth a bold proposal to the Victorian Government, advocating for a policy that would require both new and second-hand vehicle dealerships to install number plates with anti-theft screws. Additionally, they suggest that VicRoads should provide these screws to individuals for new or replacement number plates. This initiative could potentially curb the rampant thefts and provide a layer of security for vehicle owners.
Anti-theft screws are designed with a unique head that can be tightened using a standard flat-blade screwdriver but require a specialised tool for removal. While they may take longer to remove than traditional screws, and can still be forcibly cut off, the effort and noise involved would likely deter many would-be thieves or at least draw unwanted attention to their illicit activities.
Currently, car owners can choose to fit anti-theft screws themselves, but it’s recommended to have them removed at a police station to avoid any damage. The RACV’s push for mandatory use is supported by Neighbourhood Watch Victoria, which has partnered with the RACV and Victoria Police to host ‘Safe Plate Days’. During these events, volunteers help fit anti-theft screws to number plates, highlighting the community’s role in combating this issue.
The theft of number plates is more than just an inconvenience; it’s a gateway to further criminal activities. Stolen plates are often used to disguise stolen vehicles, enabling criminals to commit a range of offences from fuel theft to drug trafficking, ram raids, burglaries, and even police evasion. ‘Number plates remain the most commonly stolen item from vehicles, with thieves able to remove standard plates in under 10 seconds, Neighbourhood Watch Victoria’s CEO,’ Bambi Gordon, stated. The problem is compounded by ‘virtual theft’, where criminals clone registration details from photos on car sales websites or social media, creating counterfeit plates to cover their tracks.
If you find yourself a victim of number plate theft, it’s crucial to report it to the police immediately. This can be done by calling 13 14 44, submitting an online form, or visiting your nearest police station. Prompt reporting not only helps in the recovery process but also prevents potential misuse of your stolen plates.
As we continue to navigate the rising concerns around vehicle-related crimes, it’s important for car owners to consider different ways to protect their property. The use of anti-theft screws on number plates is one potential solution that could help reduce thefts and the subsequent crimes that follow.
