Is Kmart’s $22 electric toothbrush too good to be true?

The world of budget-friendly shopping is always abuzz with the latest finds and deals, and Kmart has long been a treasure trove for those seeking value without compromising on quality. From chic homewares to functional activewear, and from outdoor essentials to kitchen gadgets, Kmart has established itself as a go-to destination for Australians looking to stretch their dollars further. Among the plethora of products, Kmart’s range often includes affordable alternatives to high-end items, allowing shoppers to enjoy the luxury of choice without the hefty price tag.

However, not all that glitters is gold, and sometimes, even the most promising of products can leave consumers divided. Such is the case with the OXX electric toothbrush, a $22 offering from Kmart that has sparked a debate among its users. While some shoppers have been left less than impressed, others might find it to be a hidden gem, especially after hearing what dental experts have to say.

The OXX electric toothbrush, available in vibrant purple and green, boasts two speeds and gentle vibrations. Yet, it’s these very features that have become the focal point of contention. One customer lamented, ‘It just vibrates, I never knew I had sensitive teeth until I used one of these. I couldn’t tolerate it. Better off with one that rotates.’ Another shopper suggested, ‘You’re better off buying an Oral B brush for the same price on sale at Woolies or Coles. The heads rotate so all you have to do is hold the brush and move it to each tooth.’

The debate doesn’t end with customer reviews. When it comes to the effectiveness of rotating versus vibrating toothbrushes, Dr Giulia D’Anna, a dentist and founder of iDental, told Yahoo Lifestyle that the superiority of one over the other isn’t clear-cut. The shape of the toothbrush head plays a significant role, with rotating heads often being smaller and thus easier to manoeuvre into tight spaces in the mouth. On the other hand, vibrating or ultrasonic brushes typically have a rectangular head, which can offer advantages over manual brushing.

Gavin Quek, Chair of the National Oral Health Committee at the Australian Dental Association Ltd, emphasises the importance of technique, stating, ‘Scientific studies show that there are benefits of using electric toothbrushes compared to manual toothbrushes. However, how well any toothbrush cleans your teeth depends on how well you use it.’

When choosing an electric toothbrush, Dr Anna Kelly, a cosmetic dentist from Sydney, recommends looking for two key features: a pressure sensor to prevent excessive force and a two-minute timer to ensure adequate brushing time. Additionally, Gavin highlights the benefits of modern electric toothbrushes with Bluetooth connectivity, which can help track and improve brushing habits.

Dr D’Anna also points out the significance of the toothbrush head size, flat bristles, some form of ultrasonic movement, and a timer as important factors to consider. Ultimately, she believes that if a toothbrush, such as the Kmart one, encourages someone to brush for the recommended two minutes, it’s a victory for oral health.

So, is the $22 Kmart electric toothbrush worth the investment? It may come down to personal preferences and priorities. If the allure of a low price point and attractive design is enough to get you brushing regularly and properly, then it might just be the bargain you’ve been looking for. On the flip side, if you’re someone who prioritises specific features and performance, you might want to keep an eye out for sales on other brands.
