Australian Idol star Courtney Murphy shares update on cancer battle

In a world where reality TV stars often fade from public memory as quickly as they appear, some manage to leave a lasting impression. Courtney Murphy, who charmed the nation with his powerful performances on the 2004 season of Australian Idol, is one such star.

However, today we share news not of a new album or tour, but of Murphy’s recent update on his ongoing battle with bowel cancer.

The news of the Australian Idol star’s health battle was first made known after his family set up a GoFundMe page in April to support him through his treatment.

‘Our beautiful brother Courtney Murphy is in for the fight of his life,’ the family wrote. ‘It is with heavy hearts that we share [that] Court has been diagnosed with advanced stage bowel cancer. It’s very serious.’

The family’s statement continued, ‘As a self-employed musician with a wife and three young children, Courtney will not be able to work for the foreseeable future which leaves his young family fighting much harder than we want them to be.’

The diagnosis was a double blow to the Murphy family, coming just months after the loss of Courtney’s father, Kim, to an aggressive brain tumour.

Nearly a year after his diagnosis, the talented musician and father-of-three has shared a poignant update with his fans. Speaking to Perth Now, Murphy revealed the current reality of his health battle.

‘It’s nearly a year on now from my diagnosis and there’s no end in sight as far as treatment goes. I’ve told my doctors to throw everything they’ve got at it,’ he said.

‘I’m willing to do whatever it takes, I’m going to keep looking forward to putting out the next album.’

Murphy’s journey since placing third on Australian Idol has been one of creative exploration and personal growth. From his memorable stint in the Queen musical We Will Rock You to his performances with The Murphy Brothers alongside his siblings, Murphy has been a fixture in the local music scene for nearly three decades.

His voice has been a source of joy for many, and now, in his time of need, the community he has entertained for so long is rallying around him to show support.

We at YourLifeChoices send our heartfelt wishes to Courtney Murphy and his family during this challenging time.

Bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer, is among the most common types of cancer in the country.

With this, we are encouraging our YourLifeChoices readers to consider the importance of regular health check-ups and screenings. You could also participate in the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program.

The program ‘aims to reduce deaths from bowel cancer by detecting early signs of the disease’ as 90 per cent of bowel cancer cases can be successfully treated if diagnosed early.

With the program, eligible Australians aged 45 to 74 can do free at-home tests every two years. You can request your first free kit by submitting a form, calling 1800 627 701, or asking your doctor about getting one.

Have you or someone you know been affected by cancer? How has the support of the community made a difference in your journey? Share your stories and thoughts in the comments below, and let’s continue to uplift one another through life’s toughest challenges.
