For over a decade, he’s been the familiar face guiding contestants through wild twists and emotional moments.
He’s also been the calming voice during some of the most chaotic tribal councils. But now, something has shifted.
Rumblings of change are in the air—leaving many fans wondering what’s really going on behind the scenes.
A host’s torch snuffed
Jonathan LaPaglia—affectionately known as ‘JLP’ to fans—recently announced that his time on Australian Survivor is coming to an end.
He shared the news in a cheeky video on social media, where an AI-generated version of himself is hit by a giant boxing glove.
In a caption filled with Survivor references, he wrote that he’d been ‘blindsided’ by the decision.
‘Australian Survivor has seen some of the most epic blindsides over the last 10 years, but this one might just be the craziest of them all… because it happened to me,’ he shared.
Channel 10 had contacted him to express their thanks, then revealed they were heading ‘in a different direction’ for the next season.
With ratings dipping recently, the network seemingly decided it was time for a shake-up.
‘So for the first time ever, this is not a tribe swap, but a HOST SWAP®️. Yes, you read that right,’ JLP added.
True to the show’s spirit, he joked that since he had no hidden immunity idol, he would snuff his own torch and send himself home.
Who will fill the buff?
Soon after, reports surfaced that former Survivor champion David Genat—fondly called the ‘Golden God’—would take over hosting duties.
Genat made his debut in Champions v Contenders II in 2019 and later won All Stars in 2020.
He’s no stranger to intense gameplay and strategic showdowns.
He also appeared on The Celebrity Apprentice and recently walked away with a staggering $US5.8 million ($8.7 million AUD ) prize on Deal or No Deal Island.
Channel 10’s decision to hand him the hosting reins is a bold one.
While Genat certainly has the charisma and credentials, he’s got big shoes—and an even bigger hat collection—to fill.
A legacy of loyalty and laughs
The response to JLP’s departure has been overwhelmingly heartfelt.
Former players, longtime fans, and fellow personalities flooded social media with words of support.
Two-time player Nick Iadanza captured the mood, saying, ‘JLP has been that beacon on the hill for so many players and so many fans… I’m going to be absolutely ecstatic that we had him for so long, and absolutely devastated that we’ve now lost him.’
Other Survivor alumni echoed the sentiment. Logan Johannisen thanked JLP for being part of his Survivor journey and for his ‘endless ball jokes’.
Kristie Bennett called the decision ‘brutal’ and added, ‘You made this show with the players from the ground up. Always an icon!’
Fan favourite Luke Toki remarked, ‘Not a bad word in the comments lets you know the impact you have left on everyone that played and watched the game.’
What’s next for JLP—and the show?
While JLP’s time as host is wrapping up, he isn’t quite finished yet.
He will still front the upcoming Survivor: Australia v the World, which was filmed last year and is slated to premiere in July.
This season promises to be a blockbuster, with seven fan-favourites from Australia facing off against contestants from South Africa, New Zealand, Finland, and the United States.
JLP has even called it ‘probably our best season ever’—giving fans one final chance to see him in his element.
As for the future, Channel 10 appears to be banking on Genat to bring renewed energy to the franchise.
Still, as any long-time viewer knows, change can be a gamble. The show’s format, challenges, and host all contribute to its lasting appeal.
Will Genat usher in a new golden era, or will fans find themselves longing for JLP’s classic tribal council zingers?
Your turn: How do you feel about the shake-up?

Bad move, very bad move, we all love JLP he makes the show what it is, doubt I will be watching Genat who comes across as a wanky male model up himself. Anyway the host’s role is limited so I can’t see how changing the host is going to make any great difference. If the ratings are a little down who cares, it happens but it is not because of JLP but some of the contestants are boring morons but more likely because generations pass on and a lot of people are tired of reality shows or find something else to watch. Personally I love the show and look forward to it every year, it’s also important to keep it in the pacific setting, the year they had it in Australia because of covid was bloody awful.
LET’S HOPE CHANNEL 10 IDIOTS COME TO THEIR SENSES AND BRING JLP BACK!!
