Harry Potter star opens up about her limited time left—‘haven’t got long to live’

For many of us, the magical world of Harry Potter holds a special place in our hearts.

Whether you read the books to your grandkids or watched the films with your family, the series has become a cultural touchstone across generations.

But behind the scenes, the actors who brought these beloved characters to life are, of course, only human—and sometimes, their real-life stories are just as moving as anything conjured up at Hogwarts.

One such story is that of Miriam Margolyes, the unforgettable actress who played Professor Pomona Sprout, the herbology expert with a twinkle in her eye and a knack for magical plants.

At 84, Miriam has charmed audiences not just in the wizarding world, but across decades of stage and screen.

Now, she’s opening up about her health and the reality of growing older in the public eye.

In a recent candid interview with The Times, Miriam didn’t shy away from the facts: ‘When you know that you haven’t got long to live—and I’m probably going to die within the next five or six years, if not before—I’m loath to leave behind performing. It’s such a joy. I yearn to play roles that don’t confine me to wheelchairs, but I’m just not strong enough.’

It’s a sentiment that will resonate with many of us. As we age, our bodies may slow down, but our passions and dreams rarely do.

Miriam’s honesty about her health struggles—including spinal stenosis, arthritis and rheumatism—reminds us that even the brightest stars face the same challenges as the rest of us.

In 2023, Miriam underwent aortic valve replacement surgery, a procedure that quite literally gave her a new lease on life.

With her trademark wit, she joked on the Table Manners podcast, ‘I’ve got a cow’s heart now. Well, not the whole heart. I’ve had an aortic valve replaced by a cow’s aortic valve. I don’t know how common it is. I’d never heard of that operation. But it saves you from having open heart surgery, which would be infinitely more invasive.’

Medical advances like this are nothing short of miraculous—and Miriam’s story is a testament to the resilience and humour that can carry us through even the toughest times.

For many seniors, her experience is a reminder that it’s never too late to seek help, try new treatments or keep laughing in the face of adversity.

Of course, the Harry Potter family has already said goodbye to several cherished cast members over the years.

Richard Harris (the original Dumbledore), Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon), Alan Rickman (Professor Snape), John Hurt (Ollivander), Robert Hardy (Cornelius Fudge), Helen McCrory (Narcissa Malfoy), Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid), Michael Gambon (the second Dumbledore) and Maggie Smith (Professor McGonagall) have all passed on—leaving behind legacies that continue to inspire and delight fans around the world.

Each of these actors brought something unique to the screen, and their performances live on in the hearts of millions.

Miriam Margolyes—with her infectious energy and unfiltered honesty—is very much a part of that legacy.

Her willingness to speak openly about ageing, illness and the realities of life after 60 is both refreshing and important.

As the Harry Potter universe prepares for a new chapter with the upcoming HBO series, it’s worth taking a moment to appreciate the original cast—their talent, their humour and their humanity.

Miriam’s story is a powerful reminder that while magic may be fictional, the courage and spirit of those who bring it to life are very real indeed.

What are your thoughts on the legacy left by the Harry Potter cast? Have you followed the careers of these actors beyond the films? How do you feel about the way the franchise honours their memories? We invite you to share your reflections and experiences in the comments below.
