‘We don’t notice it’: Australian twins break the internet for their unusual trait

In the ever-evolving landscape of online trends, certain stories possess an undeniable charm that resonates globally. Currently capturing widespread attention is the unique case of a pair of twins whose shared characteristic has propelled them into the viral spotlight.

This heartwarming story unfolds in the vast expanse of the internet, where viral sensations typically have a fleeting moment. Yet, these siblings have struck a chord with their unusual, endearing traits.

Bridgette and Paula Powers, affectionately known as the ‘Twinnies’, have become an online sensation for their uncanny ability to speak in perfect unison. This talent has charmed and baffled viewers across the globe.

The Powers sisters, who hail from the Sunshine Coast, have spoken in tandem for as long as they can remember.

‘You know it’s hard,’ Bridgette explained with Paula often chiming in seamlessly during the conversation. ‘We don’t notice it ourselves when we’re getting interviewed.’

Their synchronised speech recently gained renewed attention following a viral video featuring the 51-year-old twins recounting a harrowing event.

Dressed identically, they described witnessing a collision involving a carjacked vehicle. As they narrated the incident, their mother’s bravery, and the threat posed by a gun-toting man, their simultaneous speech pattern was impossible to ignore.

‘One guy, he was up there with our mum. He went up there and he was coming back down toward us,’ one began, with the other completing the thought, ‘And he goes “run, he’s got a gun!”‘ they declared in unison.

Some media figures have hailed the video as ‘one of the greatest news interviews of all time,’ while others have expressed disbelief at the twins’ unique characteristics, with comments like ‘This can’t be real, right?’

However, not all the feedback has been positive. Bridgette revealed that they’ve encountered scepticism and negativity online, with some accusing them of fakery.

‘There [are] a lot of negative comments on Facebook because some people say, “It’s fake. How can you rehearse a conversation?” You can’t. It’s us, and we’ve tried not to talk together, and it’s impossible,’ she said.

This isn’t the first time the ‘Twinnies’ have captured international attention. In 2016, they were interviewed on British TV, leaving former Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan in awe.

When asked about their synchronised speaking, the sisters responded in harmony: ‘It comes automatically. We don’t know how it happens. Some people say, “Do you rehearse a conversation?”, and we said, “No, how can you rehearse a conversation?”‘

Beyond their viral fame, Bridgette and Paula have dedicated their lives to a noble cause. For 25 years, they’ve run the Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue in Landsborough, where they rehabilitate injured seabirds and pelicans.

Their sanctuary faced financial difficulties two years ago, but thanks to a generous donation from a businessman, they could continue their vital work. The twins hope their newfound viral fame will bring more awareness and support to their conservation efforts.

‘It would be great. Yeah, because all wildlife [needs] to be saved,’ Bridgette stated with conviction.

Despite the occasional negative comment about their speaking style, the Powers sisters remain unfazed. They’ve grown accustomed to the curiosity and sometimes disbelief that their unique talent inspires.

‘We used to worry, but we don’t worry no more. We just giggle at them,’ Bridgette shared.
