Against all odds: A couple’s remarkable encounter with wildlife in Grampians National Park

In the aftermath of the devastation, nature often reveals moments of resilience and hope that can take our breath away. Such was the case for Peter Kervarec and his partner, who experienced a poignant encounter in the charred remains of Victoria’s Grampians National Park. This story not only highlights the harsh realities of bushfire damage in Australia but also the enduring spirit of our native wildlife.

The Grampians National Park, a beloved tourist destination known for its stunning landscapes and rich biodiversity, was recently ravaged by bushfires that consumed an estimated 76,000 hectares. The fires left behind a desolate scene, with once-lush vegetation reduced to ash and the horizon marked by the blackened skeletons of trees. It’s a sight that has become all too familiar in Australia, particularly following the catastrophic 2019/2020 Black Summer Bushfires that affected an estimated 3 billion animals.

Despite the bleakness, Kervarec and his partner decided to venture into the park, driving along the road between Dunkeld and Lake Bellfield, which had only just been reopened. The extent of the damage was immediately apparent, with the landscape around them bearing the scars of the recent inferno. ‘It’s pretty bad,’ Kervarec recalled, noting the absence of life in what used to be a thriving ecosystem.

However, as they continued their journey, a glimmer of life appeared on the road ahead. Two curious echidnas emerged, foraging for food amidst the barren ground. The couple pulled over, and Kervarec, a photographer, seized the opportunity to capture the moment. One echidna, seemingly unfazed by human presence, approached him closely, even pausing in his shadow before continuing its search for sustenance.

Echidnas are known for their resilience. These spiny creatures can burrow into the soil, hide under vegetation, and seek shelter in hollow logs and rock crevices during extreme weather. They are also surprisingly adept swimmers. This adaptability likely contributed to their survival during the bushfires, as evidenced by the second echidna the couple found taking refuge in a culvert.

The encounter was a stark reminder of the ‘massive loss of animals and what they feed on’ that Kervarec observed throughout the park. The bushfires had sterilised the area, leaving little in the way of insects, spiders, or any other form of life that the park’s birds and other animals depend on. The destruction of natural habitats and food sources poses a significant challenge to the recovery of the park’s ecosystems, which, according to wildlife rescue group WIRES, could take decades.

Yet, amidst the devastation, there are signs of hope. A mob of brush-tailed rock wallabies, thought to have perished in the fire, was found alive and well, demonstrating the incredible resilience of Australia’s native species. These moments of survival are especially poignant as the country faces ongoing threats from bushfires, with total fire bans in place across various regions due to extreme heatwave conditions.

As Kervarec’s experience shows, the Australian landscape and its inhabitants are both vulnerable and resilient. While the fires may have caused significant damage, the spirit of the wildlife, like the echidnas that crossed the couple’s path, endures. It’s a reminder to all of us that even in the face of great adversity, life finds a way to persevere.
