The internet can’t stop laughing at this seal’s antics—see why he’s captured thousands of hearts!

The coastal regions of Australia are often home to unique interactions between local wildlife and the human community. In one particular town, the presence of a certain marine creature has garnered considerable local attention and affection.

This animal’s distinctive behaviours have charmed residents and captured the interest of a wider audience, generating considerable commentary and observation.

In the charming coastal city of Shellharbour, a local celebrity is making waves—quite literally. Sammy the seal has become the town’s unofficial mascot, charming residents and visitors alike with his playful and sometimes mischievous behaviour.

As Australians enjoyed their Easter weekend by the water, many were delighted by the sight of Sammy’s latest antics, which have been capturing hearts and sparking laughter across the nation.

Sammy’s frolics under the Windang Bridge have become a viral sensation, with several videos circulating online showcasing the seal’s endearing habits.

His signature move? Floating upside-down with flippers waving in the air, a sight that has amused onlookers and drawn travellers eager to witness the ‘beautiful’ seal in action.

Bec Dunning, from SUP Shellharbour, has had the pleasure of observing Sammy’s quirky behaviour up close. ‘He’s definitely got a mind of his own,’ she said.

Dunning, who frequently paddles past Sammy, recounted a recent encounter where the seal playfully ‘wagged his tail’ at her and a customer while sneakily ‘hiding’ behind a bridge pylon.

Sammy has been a fixture in the area for years, according to local residents. At times, there have been up to three seals lounging under the bridge, but lately, Sammy seems to be the sole performer.

Dunning mused that the seals might even use the bridge’s pylons as a makeshift massage tool during their barrel rolls.

The area is also a hotspot for fish, providing Sammy with a plentiful buffet to snack on throughout the day.

Mitchell Leroy, SeaWorld Curator of Animal Welfare and Operations, explained that Sammy’s upside-down maneuver, known as ‘sailing,’ is a way for seals to thermoregulate. By keeping their flippers above water, they can warm up without having to leave the comfort of the water.

Leroy noted that it’s quite common for seals to settle in specific locations for extended periods, often returning to familiar spots after migrating for life events like breeding season.

These patterns are likely influenced by past successes in hunting, predator avoidance, or finding a mate.

Despite his generally bold demeanour, Sammy can be a bit skittish at times, especially when jet skis zoom by or when there’s construction noise from the bridge.

But for the most part, visitors can enjoy a peaceful moment observing the seal before he swims off to his next adventure.

Dunning shared a particularly memorable experience when Sammy, initially out of sight, suddenly popped up behind her group like a curious meerkat and followed them for a while before darting away.

These cheeky antics have endeared Sammy to thousands and made him a beloved figure in Shellharbour’s bid to be named NSW’s Top Tourism Town.

As we marvel at Sammy’s playful spirit, it’s a reminder of the joy that wildlife can bring into our lives. If you’re planning a visit to Shellharbour, keep an eye out for this charming seal—you might just be treated to a performance that will leave you smiling from ear to ear.
