Election 2016: “dirty” campaign gains momentum

The outcome of the battle for NSW’s New England electorate may be too close to call, but Independent candidate Tony Windsor must be questioning his return to politics.

You would think that the recent Newspoll putting Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce ahead by 51 to 49 must be giving Mr Windsor a big enough headache, but it appears he’s fighting on all fronts.

The Australian yesterday reported allegations of bullying by Mr Windsor during his time at Tamworth’s Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School in the 1960s. The allegations – include slashing of a younger pupil’s knuckles with a knife and beating others with a riding crop – have lead to Mr Windsor seeking legal advice.

Mr Windsor claims the reports are simply “gutter journalism” and that he “will not dignify the article by commenting further”.

The reports come hot on the heels of Mr Windsor’s claims that a Nationals ad depicts him a ‘philanderer’. The ad features two women talking about Mr Windsor’s support for then prime minister Julia Gillard, as though he was a cheating lover now asking her to come back via text message. Mr Windsor claims his wife Lyn is “deeply upset” over the ad.

However, Nationals candidate Barnaby Joyce is unrepentant about the ads, rejecting Mr Windsor’s claim as “faux outrage” and stating, “Any person would say, ‘this is a story about an actor, not a story about Mr Windsor’”.

Mr Joyce went on to say that, despite his party’s wishes, the campaign had become “dirty”. He accused Mr Windsor of making “unsavoury” comments about him and his campaign manager. He also claims that Mr Windsor has five attack ads running on air in New England and an offer to withdraw all Nationals ads if Mr Windsor did the same, was rejected.

"We said to Mr Windsor, 'you withdraw yours' – because they're running negative ads as well, of course – 'and we'll withdraw ours', but of course they never responded to that.”

Whether Mr Windsor can indeed oust the Deputy Prime Minister on Saturday remains to be seen, but what is certain is that his reputation has well and truly taken a beating.

Do you think that everything is game in a political campaign? Or is it time that Barnaby Joyce and Tony Windsor grow up?

I would expect nothing less from this fat sweaty bloke who pretends to be a Politian. How embarrassed to have this side show Bob as a deputy prime minister!

Good luck Tony. Always a straight talker, no nonsense, no double speak. When he decided to go with Labor at the hung parliament it was because Labor was committed to serving out the full term. Captain chaos ( the prime minister we should never have had) was not committed to the full term, and he caused as much chaos as possible along with his Lapdogs Pine and the wicked witch rom the west.
As you will have guessed by now I will not be voting for the Puppet Man and his team of under performing wimps.

Tony Windsor was as much a straight talker as our current Deputy PM is. Despite what anyone says out of frustration with the politicking that goes on, Barnaby has been one to "say it as it currently is" regardless of when he was a senator and now the member for new England. All folks have got to get past the "doctored" rhetoric that the media wolf pack " want you to see & hear" so they can just sell a story & make big bucks.

With sincere respect, quite frankly Tony W had his time on stage and is of similar age to retired/retiring MP Warren Truss. When Pollies reach 70 & above, they should announce retiring as graciously as possible, effective as of the next Federal or State Election. That way we taxpayers don't hafta keep paying outrageously for unnecessary by-elections mid - term.

That would enable greater turnover in Fed & State political office to "serve" their country as best they are able.

When the three independents walked into parliament last time they were portrayed as dunder heads, but turned out to be reasonable pollies albeit one hit wonders. Barnaby on the other hand has proven himself a dunder head without too much help at all. Such is the way of politics!
I wonder about Windsor though. While railing against mining in his electorate he sold his own property to a mining corporate which seems a little duplicitous. But his personal life is just that and I can't see what it has to do with his ability to represent the electorate.

However, when given a choice between a confirmed dunder head and a maybe, the choice is pretty clear.

Windsor certainly lost some credibility when he sold his property to a mining company but then any of us might have done the same had we received an offer for our homes well in excess of their value.
The 3 Independents you mention have received a lot of stick from the right wing trolls on this website but my recollection is that they did an ok job. What the trolls and their employers are not able to live with is that Independents are not rubber stamps. That is what both sides want.

A lot of posters are saying the same thing. My knowledge of the 3 Independents in the Gillard government is limited but I did see all 3 trying to fix problems (gambling, alcohol deaths) which both sides refused to address because of the vested interests they held (Pubs and Clubs).

I have relatives in that electorate who are waiting with baseball bats. They haven't forgiven Windsor for siding with Labor because it wasn't in the spirit of the vote that got him to Canberra. Only 8% of the electorate voted Labor, hardly a ringing endorsement to sway Windsor.

I know a lot more people with cricket bats (they're Aussies) waiting to find Tony Abbott.
Windsor is not in a city electorate and country people stick together. It will be interesting if the pork barrelling from Joyce has bought enough of them out. We'll see.

I have read and reread the article and can find no mention of Abbott but Mick seems to be besotted with him as he continually references him in posts. Please read my post carefully Mick as I insinuated that those good folk from the country are sticking together but not to support Windsor. Please enumerate the pork barrelling to which you refer.

Debbie, I applaud you for your frankness and "balls" (no insult meant whatsoever) to have written this article - not because I agree with it entirely (and I do!), but because it is one of the few articles I have seen on this site which has some teeth in it and doesn't see to have been edited to please the majority by not speaking the truth.

Good to see Debbie is having a go. Looking at how this campaign has been run by the coalition one might draw a conclusion about who the culprit is. Some of the dirtiest campaigning I can remember from the lowest life political party in Australian history.
I find it inexcusable that opponents go back almost 60 years to slur but then nothing surprises me from the current government. This crew is but a whisker away from dictatorship and given the right set of conditions it would be on. Frightening.

Yes, Mick, when CREDIBLE policies are absent (and they certainly are with the LNP, Labor, AND Greens) the mud comes out, lies (aka promises) are rampant, and most politicians gravitate to their own level - the gutter.

Tony Windsor was originally elected as a National Party member, he then in the middle of a sitting of parliament, changed to an Independent.
Reminds me of several others that have done the same, Democrats to Labor, Greens to Labor. But the latter is now screeching for his supper.
If I was in the electorate, I would put Tony Windsor LAST.
Leopards don't change their spots, he would likely go from Independent to Labor or Greens or Xenophonist or a Palmerite, sorry the last one is no longer with us.
