Are you in the taxman’s sights?

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has today released its hit list of deductions on which it will be focusing come tax return time. Should you be worried?

Usually the ATO highlights certain professions which will attract interest but this year it has focussed on certain deductions. If you use your mobile phone, computer or tablet for work purposes and claim it as a deduction then consider yourself as being under the watchful eye of the ATO. Karen Anstis, ATO assistant commissioner said that its important that people claim correctly for use of electronic devices. “People are using their computers at home for work-related purposes but it is very important they understand the distinction between what is work-related and what is personal use,” she says.

The use of more sophisticated technology systems and cross-matching information with banks and other government agencies mean that it is now easier for the ATO to track down excessive claims. Work-related travel claims are also in the sights of the ATO and Anstis says, “We have guides on our website for specific industries and occupations at”

Those who have simple tax affairs can use My Tax online system which has only 10 main screens and can be used on a PC, tablet or smartphone. My Tax can be used from 1 July 2014, however, if you wait until August the ATO will pre-fill information from previous returns, banks, employers, government agencies and health insurance provider.
