Historic biscuit favourite returns to the menu after 17 years

In a heartwarming nod to tradition, a beloved fast-food chain has made a long-awaited return of a classic Australian sweet treat after 17 years. The revival of this iconic biscuit isn’t just about reviving nostalgic taste memories, but also about honouring the nation’s veterans in a meaningful way.

Subway, known for its submarine sandwiches, had previously shelved the Anzac biscuit due to cost concerns. However, in a surprising move, the chain has now reintroduced the biscuit, staying true to the original World War I recipe, and is dedicating proceeds from its sales to support Australian veterans through the Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL).

The Anzac biscuit holds a special place in the hearts of Australians. Its origins trace back to the days of World War I, when these durable, long-lasting biscuits were sent overseas in care packages to Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) soldiers. They served as a sweet reprieve from the monotonous and often unpalatable rations soldiers had to endure. Over time, the Anzac biscuit became a symbol of support and remembrance for troops who served their country.

The significance of the Anzac biscuit is such that its name and recipe are protected by law. Sellers must adhere closely to the traditional recipe if they wish to use the Anzac name—a testament to the biscuit’s cultural importance.

Social media food critic Russ Eats delved into Subway’s past attempts to tweak the recipe for affordability, which ultimately led to the biscuit’s removal from their menu in 2008. ‘Subway made a request, and that’s what you’ve got to do to sell an Anzac biscuit—you’ve got to make a request, and it was denied to alter the recipe to make it more affordable because it didn’t follow the old-fashioned proper recipes,’ he explained.

Now, with a renewed commitment to authenticity, Subway has not only brought back the biscuit but is also contributing to a noble cause. RSL Australia National President Greg Melick expressed gratitude for the initiative, highlighting how such support enables the organisation to continue evolving its programs to meet the changing needs of veterans across generations.

Russ Eats, while appreciative of Subway’s efforts, remained impartial in his review, focusing solely on the quality of the biscuit itself. ‘They’ve copped it on the chin,’ he said, acknowledging Subway’s previous misstep and their current charitable endeavor. Yet, his verdict was clear: ‘Overall, it’s pretty f**king good. I am gonna give it a 7.5/10 because nothing will ever compete with a homecooked Anzac biscuit, but it’s a pretty fun little f**king Subway Anzac hybrid.’

The limited-time offering of the Subway Anzac biscuit is available from 7 April to 4 May, 2025. It’s a chance for Australians to indulge in a taste of history, contribute to a worthy cause, and perhaps even spark conversations about the nation’s past and the sacrifices made by its service members.

So, dear readers, whether you’re a history buff, a biscuit aficionado, or simply someone who appreciates the intersection of culinary delight and charitable giving, make sure to grab an Anzac biscuit from Subway before they’re gone again. And while you’re savouring that sweet, oaty crunch, take a moment to reflect on the legacy of the ANZACs and the ongoing efforts to support our veterans.
