ALDI shoppers are raving about this $1 health snack alternative

In the world of health-conscious snacking, Australians are always on the lookout for delicious treats that won’t derail their dietary goals. Enter the latest buzz from the aisles of ALDI, where savvy shoppers have stumbled upon a gem: a $1 dupe for a beloved Aussie health snack that’s sending waves of excitement through the community.

The snack in question? A low-sugar, low-carb alternative to the iconic Cherry Ripe, originally made popular by the Australian confectionery company Noshu. Known for its range of cookies, doughnuts, chocolate bars, and cakes, Noshu has carved out a niche for those seeking sweet indulgence without the guilt. Their products, which boast 85% less sugar than traditional sweets, are a staple in major supermarkets like Coles, Woolworths, and IGA.

Noshu’s chocolate bars, including their takes on Cherry Ripe and Bounty chocolates, have garnered a loyal following. Typically, a pack of five bars retails for $8.90, but ALDI shoppers have discovered the Hillcrest Low-Sugar Choc Coconut Delight bar, which offers a similar experience for just $4.99 for a five-pack. That’s an unbeatable $1 per bar!

The excitement was palpable on social media, where one fan shared her find in a popular Facebook group, claiming the ALDI version tasted ‘identical’ to Noshu’s. ‘If you like Noshu bars then get on these,’ she urged, sparking a flurry of agreement from other group members. ‘The cherry one is better. So good,’ another shopper added.

But how do these two low-sugar options stack up against each other? While the ALDI bar does contain more carbohydrates per serving than the Noshu bar—8.3g compared to 5.5g—it also has less sugar, with only 1.5g against Noshu’s 2.8g. This difference may be significant for those strictly monitoring their carb intake, such as individuals with diabetes. Indeed, one commenter mentioned that her husband’s endocrinologist recommended Noshu over the ALDI alternative.

Despite these differences, both bars are a far cry from the sugar and carb content of a traditional Cadbury Cherry Ripe, which packs 24.3g of carbs and 20.4g of sugar. For those looking to satisfy their chocolate cravings without the sugar spike, either option is a step in the right direction.

However, it’s not all sweet news. Accredited practising dietitian Leanne Ward expressed reservations on her podcast, The Nutrition Couch, about the nutritional value of these low-sugar chocolate bars. While acknowledging their appeal, she pointed out that they are high in saturated fat and heavily processed. ‘They’re not really ingredients I know too much about,’ Ward said, referring to the long list of ingredients that make up the bars. She emphasised that such ultra-processed foods wouldn’t make it into her clients’ meal plans.

So, what’s the verdict for health-conscious snackers? If you’re seeking a nutritious snack, you might want to look beyond the ALDI Noshu knock-off. But if you’re after a cheap, low-sugar treat to quell those Cherry Ripe or Bounty cravings, ALDI’s offering might just be the perfect pick-me-up—at a price that’s hard to resist.

  1. Oh must try that one! Has anyone noticed the latest huge increase in the price of Cadbury products? It now costs $7 for a small 190 gm bar of chocolate! So my way of reducing my chocolate intake is to only buy when there is a good offer on! One way to keep to keep your weight down….However, I still troll the Reject Shops for my choccy fix, as quite often you can get a better deal there for Cadbury/Nestle etc…
