ALDI’s peanut butter makeover sparks uproar – is it really better?

In the world of grocery shopping, especially for those of us who have passed the half-century mark, consistency is key. We find a product we love, and we stick to it — whether it’s for its taste, its price, or the comfort of knowing exactly what we’re getting. So, when a supermarket like ALDI makes a ‘sneaky’ change to a beloved item, it’s bound to ruffle some feathers.

Recently, a wave of discontent has spread through the ALDI customer base, with shoppers expressing their frustration over a change to a pantry favourite: peanut butter. The uproar began when an observant Aussie mum noticed that her go-to crunchy peanut butter just didn’t taste the same. Taking to the ALDI Mums Facebook group, she shared her discovery, and it wasn’t long before others chimed in with similar grievances.

The changes, while seemingly minor, have had a significant impact on the product’s quality, according to loyal customers. The peanut butter, which was once made in Argentina, is now produced in India. The switch from ‘palm fat’ to ‘palm oil’ and a higher percentage of peanuts in the mix were also noted. Despite the label artwork remaining unchanged, these alterations have left a sour taste in the mouths of many.

‘I am going to email ALDI our personal feedback that it’s not as nice of a product and we will be returning it,’ the original poster lamented. ‘Such a shame as we now need to start the process of finding a new crunchy peanut butter – any recs?’

The community’s response was swift and supportive. Many shared their disappointment, with one shopper saying, ‘I agree, it is nowhere near as nice as the original one they had.’ Another added, ‘We took ours back for a refund as we had bought a few jars and they refunded them all without any issue, so I imagine they have had a few complaints.’

The conversation then turned to the perplexing nature of the changes. ‘It should be better, doesn’t more % of peanuts mean less % of other stuff? Palm fat and palm oil are the same. Btw the peanuts have their own oil. Why are they adding palm oil? It doesn’t sound good,’ a commenter questioned.

As the community rallied, recommendations for alternative peanut butter brands began to pour in. While some suggested other ALDI options, such as the American Style Peanut Butter, there were fears that this product too might be discontinued. ‘We liked the American peanut butter from ALDI’s, haven’t seen it in agessss. Most other brands are too dry for my liking,’ a shopper remarked.

For those seeking new brands, Mayvers and Skippy’s emerged as popular choices. ‘My kids and hubby like the one from Costco (Skippy I think). I prefer the Mayvers from Woolies,’ one commenter recommended. Others praised the quality of Pics, Sanitarium Crunchy, and Skippy Extra Crunchy, all available at Woolworths.
