Could a raw meat diet be a fast track to a heart attack? Top doctor explains

The world of nutrition is constantly filled with new ideas and approaches, and for many of us who are often particularly attuned to our health and well-being, navigating this landscape can be both intriguing and sometimes confusing.

A controversial eating pattern, the raw meat diet is gaining attention from social media enthusiasts and health seekers. Some claim it is a solution to modern health issues.

However, an Australian health expert warned that this diet could be more of a fast track to the emergency room than a path to optimal health.

The carnivore diet is a radical approach to eating that eliminates all plant-based foods, focusing solely on the consumption of meat—and for the most extreme followers, raw meat.

This diet has gained notoriety through influencers like the ‘Liver King’, who advocate for a return to ancestral eating habits and claim that it’s the key to unlocking peak physical condition.

However, as Dr Zac Turner pointed out, the carnivore diet is far from the balanced eating patterns recommended by most health professionals.

While consuming raw meat may seem like a return to our primal roots, Dr Turner emphasised the significant health risks associated with this practice.

The absence of essential nutrients in fruits, vegetables, and grains, such as vitamin C, fibre, antioxidants, and minerals, can lead to severe deficiencies and health complications.

Scurvy, once a common disease among sailors with limited access to fresh produce, could make an unwelcome comeback among followers of the raw meat diet.

Moreover, the high intake of saturated fats and proteins associated with consuming large quantities of meat can increase the risk of heart disease, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure. Those with pre-existing kidney conditions may find their situation exacerbated by the heavy protein load.

The most immediate danger lies in the potential for foodborne illnesses. Raw meat can harbour harmful bacteria and parasites, such as Salmonella, E. coli, and tapeworms, leading to severe gastrointestinal distress and long-term health issues.

Dr Turner also addressed the misleading nature of social media influencers who promote extreme diets like the raw meat diet. The ‘success stories’ often showcased online are frequently the result of a combination of factors, including eliminating processed foods, rather than consuming raw animal organs.

Furthermore, the behind-the-scenes reality of these influencers may involve the use of supplements, hormones, steroids, and image manipulation, far from the effortless health and vitality they project.

For those seeking to improve their health through diet, Dr Turner recommends a more balanced approach. Incorporating various foods, including meat, eggs, vegetables, and fruits, can provide the body with the necessary nutrients without the risks associated with extreme diets.

For individuals with digestive issues, exploring low-FODMAP or elimination diets under the guidance of a qualified dietitian can offer relief without compromising overall health.

Dr Turner advises anyone considering the raw meat diet to prioritise a balanced diet, cook their meat properly, and seek nutrition advice from credible sources.
