homemade scone with cheese in rustic setting

Scones don’t always have to be served with cream and jam. Our Cheese and Bacon Scones are a savoury take on a tea-time favourite.

Serves: 4
Time: 1 hour

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (480g) self-raising flour
  • 60g butter
  • 90g grated cheddar
  • 90 grams chopped bacon
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg yolk beaten (for glaze)
  • 1 teaspoon water

Method
Preheat oven to 200C (180C fan-forced). Sift flour into a bowl then blend in butter with fingers. Stir together with grated cheese and chopped bacon. Add in the milk, mixing just until you have a soft dough. Roll dough out onto a lightly-floured surface, 1 – 2cm thick. Cut into 5 – 6cm rounds. Place rounds onto a greased tray and brush with egg. Bake in preheated oven until golden brown (about 12 –15 minutes).

Fair question as the recipe doesn't say when to add water!

Maybe the teaspoon of water is added to the egg to make it easier to brush.
