Low-fat Spicy Teacake

This delicious spiced teacake can be served with fruit and yogurt for a low-fat dessert

Low-fat Spicy Teacake

Who doesn’t love a slice of cake with a cup of tea? Even better is that this Spicy Teacake is low-fat, so you can enjoy a second slice!


  • 250g self-raising flour
  • 150g dark brown soft sugar
  • 4 tablespoons golden syrup (you can use light molasses, if you prefer)
  • 250ml buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons mixed spice
  • pinch of salt

Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Grease and line a loaf tin.

Sieve the flour into a bowl and add the sugar and syrup. Pour in the milk, stirring to combine.

Pour into the loaf tin and bake for an hour.

Serve with some sliced apple and Greek yoghurt.

Serving suggestion: sprinkle with oats before baking.

    It looks quite dense. It would have been nice to have a picture of it sliced so we could get a more accurate idea of the finished cake.
