With minimum ingredients, this simple cake is moist and delicious – perfect with a cuppa and to share with friends. Serve with icing or not, it is good enough to stand on its own.

Serves: 10
Time: 1.5 hours

  • 2 cups self-raising flour
  • 250g butter, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla essence
  • 2 cups caster sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 3/4 cup custard powder
  • 1 cup milk

Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C, fan forced). In a large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients. Using an electric mixer, mix until just combined. Pour cake batter into a 23cm square or round cake pan. Cook for 1 hour. Check cake with a wooden skewer, as cake may take an additional 5–10 minutes to finish cooking through the middle.

Really 2 CUPS OF SUGAR in this cake. WHY,
when sugar is suppose to be the Bad diet "thing".
There is no need to have that much sugar in any cake.
It would be best if YOUR recipes are more Healthy for US than this one,
    which is not for anyone.

I have to agree - should be called 'Sugar Cake'. Way too much!

You could probably reduce the sugar content by a third or even a half without losing too much moistness.

GeeWizz, that needs to come with a warning, Diabetics be ware. 2 cups sugar, 250 gm butter? No thanks.
How about a nice healthy alternative, please. One of the worst recipes I have seen here.
