Orange Poppy Seed Cake

Enjoy our Orange Poppy Seed Cake for afternoon tea, or bake it to celebrate a loved one’s birthday. It’s fuss free and deliciously moist.

Serves: Eight

Time: 50 minutes


  • 50g unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon finely grate orange rind
  • 1 cup caster sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup self-raising flour
  • 2 tablespoons poppy seeds
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • icing sugar, to dust


Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease a 6cm deep and 19cm square cake tin and line the sides with baking paper. In a large bowl, add the butter, orange rind, sugar, eggs, flour and poppy seeds and stir to combine. Spoon mixture into the cake tin and cook for 40 minutes. Remove and let stand for five minutes to cool. Dust with icing sugar and serve.

    For my hubbies favourite poppy seed cake,not this one,haven't tried it yet.
    But he takes the effort and puts 300 gr. of poppy seeds through a hand mill and always tells me,it's hard yakka.
    But never whinges when I ask him to do so.

    Poppy seeds for cakes,got to be crushed.

    Just made this cake and it was a flop. Didn't sound anything like the sort of instructions I've ever followed for making a cake - should have listened to my gut!!
