Woolworths drops nostalgic dessert and fans are losing it

If there’s one thing Australians love, it’s a good lamington—that iconic, coconut-dusted, chocolate-dipped sponge that’s as much a part of our national identity as backyard cricket and the smell of sausages on a summer barbie.

But just when you thought the humble lamington couldn’t get any better, Woolworths has introduced a modern twist that’s got nostalgic shoppers absolutely buzzing.

Introducing the caramelised biscuit lamington: a decadent take on the classic treat, now available in a pack of four for $12 at Woolworths stores across Australia. And let’s be honest, this isn’t just any lamington.

Picture this: a soft, pillowy vanilla sponge, generously dipped in rich caramel-flavoured chocolate, then rolled in a crunchy layer of caramelised biscuit crumbs.

If you’re thinking ‘Biscoff vibes’, you’re spot on—and you’re not alone.

Woolworths’ category manager for cakes, Laura McLeod, summed it up perfectly: ‘We know Australians love a classic lamington, but they also love the popular flavour of caramelised biscuits. We wanted to combine the two to create an exciting new treat that feels both nostalgic and modern. It’s the perfect blend of soft sponge and a crunchy, spiced biscuit coating—we think it’s a new winter favourite.’

But here’s the catch: these Caramelised Biscuit Lamingtons are a limited-edition delight, only available in the lead-up to National Lamington Day on 21 July.

So if you’re keen to try them, you’d better get your skates on—they’re not expected to last long on the shelves.

The reaction online has been nothing short of enthusiastic. One shopper declared, ‘I’m going to cry,’ while foodie influencer Nectro Vlangos (aka Nectoriouspapi) couldn’t contain his excitement: ‘Caramelised Biscuit Lamingtons are coming to Woolies… Basically Biscoff. I’m keen AF.’

And who can blame them? The combination of nostalgia and innovation is a recipe for instant cravings.

If you’re not able to make it to the store, don’t worry—these lamingtons are also available for online order, so you can have them delivered straight to your door (and maybe hide a pack from the grandkids).

But wait, there’s more! Woolworths has been on a bit of a roll lately when it comes to bakery innovations.

Just a few weeks ago, they launched the Choc Chip Cookie Mud Cake, a $7 dessert that’s already flying off the shelves at a rate of five cakes every minute.

This indulgent creation features a caramel mud cake base packed with cookie pieces, topped with a choc chip drizzle—essentially, it’s what happens when your favourite cookie and your favourite cake have a delicious baby.

Laura McLeod explained the thinking behind the new mud cake: ‘We’ve infused that unmistakable, beloved flavour of freshly baked choc chip cookies right into our signature caramel mud cake. By combining it with our popular mud cake, we’ve aimed to create an irresistible new treat.’

Australian foodie content creators Nick Vavitis and Nectro Vlangos even shared their first impressions in a taste test video, with Nick raving about the cake being ‘loaded with cookies on top’ and ‘absolutely smashing my taste buds’.

Nectro agreed, likening it to ‘a massive chocolate chip muffin’ with a caramel ganache icing that takes it to the next level.

‘It’s the best mud cake since the birthday cake flavour,’ he declared, while Nick went so far as to call it ‘definitely one of the best mud cakes Woolworths has ever released’.

It’s clear that Woolworths is tapping into our collective sweet tooth and sense of nostalgia, giving classic Australian treats a fresh twist that’s hard to resist.
