Woolworths’ new $5.50 treat has foodies buzzing—but what do taste testers think?

If you thought the excitement over hot cross buns ended with Easter, think again! Woolworths has just launched a new bakery delight that’s got foodies and sweet tooths across Australia talking—and it’s not your average finger bun.

Introducing Woolworths’ limited edition Filled Buns—a playful twist on the classic finger bun, now available for just $5.50 for a pack.

But what makes these buns so special, and why are taste testers raving about them? Let’s take a closer look at this latest treat and see if it’s worth adding to your next shopping list.

For many of us, finger buns are a nostalgic treat, bringing back memories of school canteens and afternoon teas. Traditionally, these soft, slightly sweet buns are topped with a thick layer of icing and a sprinkle of coconut.

Woolworths’ new version, however, takes things up a notch: instead of just icing on top, these buns are filled with a luscious pink strawberry buttercream inside, and finished with a delicate dusting of toasted coconut.

According to Woolworths, ‘Where finger buns traditionally only have the icing on the top of the bun, the soft, slightly sweet brioche-style bun is now filled with the delicious pink icing inside for extra flavour. The bun is finished with a delicate sprinkle of toasted coconut.’

Food reviewers and social media personalities Nectro Vlangos (aka Nectorious Papi) and Nick Vavitis were among the first to try the new Filled Buns, and their reactions have been overwhelmingly positive—especially for strawberry lovers.

Nick joked, ‘I thought they were berry berry exciting. I’m a huge strawberry lover and love a [strawberry] Freddo Frog, so the inside of it (strawberry buttercream) reminded me of the strawberry filling of a Freddo Frog, so that’s a big yes from me.’

He did add, however, that while the Filled Buns are creative and different, they don’t quite reach the heights of Woolies’ previous Cinnabon or Biscoff hot cross buns. Still, he gave them extra points for originality.

Nectro agreed, saying, ‘At first I thought it was a hot cross bun. But it’s different. This tasted more like a bread roll. It’s not meant to be a hot cross bun anyway. The strawberry filling was nice. I would’ve liked more coconut flavour to come through. They’re a cute and fun little snack that I think kids would love in their lunch boxes. I probably wouldn’t buy it again for myself though.’

On social media, the pair shared their first impressions, with Nick exclaiming, ‘The filling inside smells exactly like a strawberry Freddo Frog and that’s a big yes from me! The strawberry is like, super, super sweet, that really artificial strawberry taste, which, for me, I love.’ Nectro added, ‘The only thing is, I don’t taste any coconut,’ with Nick agreeing that the strawberry filling overpowered it.

It’s not just the taste testers who are intrigued. Woolies shoppers have been quick to share their thoughts online:

One user remarked, ‘That inside shot is unreal.’ Another chimed in with, ‘I’m berry berry keen on this.’ A third person added, ‘Legit left over hot cross buns.’ Meanwhile, someone else suggested, ‘I bet you they’re even better toasted. Or make French toast.’

Woolworths has been on a roll lately with their creative bakery releases. Earlier this year, their limited edition hot cross buns in flavours like Cinnabon, Biscoff, and Wagon Wheel had shoppers scrambling to get their hands on them. The new Filled Buns seem to be following in those footsteps, offering something a little different for those who love a sweet treat with their cuppa.

While the strawberry filling is a hit with those who enjoy a strong, sweet, and slightly artificial berry flavour, some reviewers felt the coconut was a bit lost in the mix. If you’re a fan of classic finger buns or coconut, you might find yourself wishing for a bit more of that traditional flavour.

One thing everyone seems to agree on: these buns are fun, colourful, and would make a great addition to a lunchbox or afternoon tea spread. The sweet strawberry filling is likely to be a hit with kids, and the novelty factor alone makes them worth a try if you’re looking for something new to pop in your trolley.

If you’re a fan of sweet, strawberry-flavoured treats and love trying new things from the bakery aisle, Woolworths’ Filled Buns are definitely worth a go—especially at just $5.50 a pack. They might not replace your favourite hot cross buns, but they’re a fun, limited edition snack that’s sure to put a smile on your face (or your grandkids’ faces!).
