Is swearing in some towns and cities more common than in others? Yes, according to research by Preply, which surveyed more than 1500 people in the 22 largest metropolitan areas in Australia to determine the ‘cursing capital’.

Preply asked residents about their swearing habits, looking at behaviours such as frequency of swearing and where you’re most likely to hear ‘naughty’ words.

Bendigo in Victoria ranked No.1, with residents averaging 21 swears per day compared with the national average of 14. Toowoomba, where residents swear an average of 18 times per day, came in second. In third place was the Gold Coast where locals swear an average of 17 swears per day.

Hobart residents are the least likely to swear, averaging only six swear words per day.

Young Aussies have the foulest mouths, with respondents in the 16-24 age bracket averaging 16 expletives per day, says Preply.

Australian men are more likely to swear (16 times per day) than women (13 times per day).

The most common place for Aussies to swear is while driving, with 70 per cent of respondents revealing this as their place of anger.

The likelihood of an Aussie letting a swear word slip while at work is low, with only 11 per cent of respondents swearing in professional settings.

Australia’s top 10 swear cities, according to Preply:

      1. Bendigo, Vic

      2. Toowoomba, Qld

      3. Gold Coast, Qld

      4. Newcastle, NSW

      5. Brisbane, Qld

      6. Rockhampton, Qld

      7. Albury-Wodonga, NSW

      8. Ballarat, Vic

      9. Cranbourne, Vic

      10. Wollongong, NSW

Do you swear? If so, ever considered your average?
