King of the house

Font Size:

Most famous for her role in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, Tippi Hedren has been an animal activist for decades.

Recently, images have resurfaced from when LIFE photographer Michael Rougier spent time with Hedren and her family, including daughter, Melanie Griffiths, in 1971. Taken at their home in California, the main star of the shots is Neil, a 400-pound mature lion, who appeared to run the household.

Now 84, Hedren looks back on the situation as “stupid beyond belief” and regrets putting her family at risk by allowing an animal with “no conscience or remorse” to roam free.
