Man recreates his grandpa’s photos

Christian Carollo is a photographer from Philadelphia who, three years ago, found a box of his grandfather’s 30-year-old travel photographs.

Inspired, Mr Carollo set about recreating some of the photographs his grandparent’s took during their travels in the 70s and 80s. What started as an idea he called ‘Past Present Project’, when Carollo took his first images in Oregon, has since evolved into a snap-happy photo tour of the United States.

Carollo uses his grandfather’s detailed travel journal to make sure he’s in the right spots, and then photographs the modern-day version of his grandfather’s photograph. He then takes a shot of both to show the differences and similarities at the same location.

Some places may have changed in the 30 years that have passed since the original photos, but, surprisingly, many haven’t varied much.

Carollo’s grandfather has passed on since the commencement of the Past Present Project, but his grandmother takes great joy in seeing all the places she visited with her beloved, as recreated by her grandson. According to Carollo, “She’s really happy with what I’m doing.”

Do you like this idea? Could you find some of your old photographs and do something similar? Have you done anything like this? Which one is your favourite?
