The Professor and the Madman

Based on the worldwide best-selling novel by Simon Winchester, The Professor and the Madman is an extraordinary true tale of madness, genius, and obsession about two remarkable men who created history with the writing of the Oxford English Dictionary.

The compilation of the Oxford English Dictionary began in 1857 and was one of the most ambitious, and revolutionary projects ever undertaken. Professor James Murray (Mel Gibson) took on the challenge of creating the most comprehensive dictionary ever compiled but knew that it would take him and his team over a century to compile all known definitions. However, by ‘crowd sourcing’ the work, that is, by enlisting definitions from people all over the world, the dictionary could be compiled in mere decades.

As definitions were collected, the overseeing committee, led by Professor Murray, discovered that one man, Dr WC Minor (Sean Penn), had submitted more than 10,000 words. When the committee insisted on honouring him, a shocking truth came to light: Dr Minor, an American Civil War veteran, was a convicted murderer and being held at an asylum for the criminally insane.

Read the book many years ago. It was a fascinating bit of history.

How unfair! I went to download the "free" tickets, and found I have to sign up to their company!, including being inundated with their promotional emails! NO THANKS! WHAT A GYP!

I signed up but no free ticket. Then I filled in a form for audience research screenings. You can always drop out. It looks like the ANZ is involved.

    Hi leonYLC,

I got my free ticket today for the movie. The link works. I am looking forward to seeing the movie. It's playing at a local theatre down the road from me.

    Thank you.

I also clicked on the link to find the website where you download the free tickets. First you have to sign up and provide a lot of details about yourself and opt into their marketing. I didn't do that. Then I read a little more about their "free" tickets and discovered they are talking about the free movie tickets you might receive normally costing you pounds if you had to buy them. Pounds is a UK currency. Our local cinema tickets are Aust $12 - not UK $44 pounds. I decided against signing up, even though my mother-in-law who has Alzheimers enjoys me taking her out to the movies.

Got excited when I thought I might get free tickets but apparently Queensland isn't a favoured location only 1 date at a Brisbane cinema. It's a bit far to go from the Gold Coast.
