Gardening safety tips

Gardening is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and get your daily dose of exercise. As with any form of housework, if proper care is not taken there are risks to your health and safety. Why not follow these five tips to lower the risk of injury when working in the garden?

General safety

  • when working for long periods of time ensure you drink plenty of water to stay hydrated
  • avoid inhaling the dust from potting mix by wearing a dust mask, as this can be dangerous to your health
  • wearing gloves, goggles and the appropriate clothing can prevent cuts and scrapes

Sun safety

  • even though the sun may not feel strong, or is hidden behind a cloud, you can still get sunburnt
  • a hat and a long sleeve shirt will greatly reduce the chance of you being burnt
  • always wear sunscreen, even on overcast days the sun will emit UV radiation

Gardening equipment

  • ensure you use proper equipment with appropriate safety guards
  • power tools should be in good condition with any electric devices having leads in good condition
  • read the instructions on all tools and use them accordingly
  • clean your equipment to keep it in tip top shape

Lifting and bending

  • -unless you’re superman, lifting potting mix, pots or plants can be a challenge. Always bend your knees when lifting
  • if it’s too heavy… get help!
  • if you are working in hard to reach places, consider limiting the time you spend in awkward positions

Lawn mowing and whipper snipping

  • wear the appropriate footwear—enclosed shoes or boots are a must
  • always wear long pants with thick material which will protect your legs
  • goggles or wraparound sunglasses to stop flying debris hitting your eyes which can cause a major injury
  • always stand on the top side of the mower when working on slopes
