From 20 September 2018, Newstart Allowance rates and thresholds will be indexed. Find out if your payment will be affected.

Newstart Allowance payment rates from 20 September 2018

Family situation Payment rate (per fortnight)
Single, 22 or over, no children $550.20
Single, 22 or over, with children $595.10
Single, 60 or over, after nine months $595.10
Partnered, each $496.70


Income test

Under the income test applied to the Newstart Allowance, you can earn up to $104 per fortnight pre tax, before your payment is affected.

For income levels above $104 but less than $254 per fortnight, your payment will be reduced by 50 cents for every dollar you exceed the threshold. For income above $254 per fortnight your payment reduces by 60 cents until you reach the cut-off threshold.

Single, 60 or over, after nine months $1147.00
Partnered, each $970.00


Newstart applicants will also be subject to an asset test.

    Very generous, maybe a bit too.
    Might encourage a few to retire early until they get the OAP at 65, as principal home doesnt cnot included as asset

    Please tell me someone. Have heard that people on Newstart over 60 years of age have to do 5 hours a week

    Yes, that is correct.

    My husband works at a charity shop and he told me that this only applies to people who applied for Newstart, or turned 60 this year. You'll need to check what the cut off date for this is. He mentioned it because current volunteers won't have any change to their hours, just new ones. He complained that it is getting really complex to juggle staffing at the shop because so many volunteers have different rules and he has to ensure everyone works according the correct number of hours according to the rules that apply to that particular person.

    Thanks for the info. That’s a bit sad not letting the current over 60’s work 5 hrs a week
