So much for cutting back costs! Government spending on travel skyrockets.
The cost of taxpayer-funded travel has almost doubled since the time of the Abbott Government, with ballooning travel allowances being blamed on Ministers not wanting to live in Canberra.
The total cost of travel, which includes airfares, taxis and travel allowance, exceeded $2.13 million in the last financial year – an 87 per cent increase on the Abbott Government’s travel expenditure.
But it’s not just the Government’s travel spending that has skyrocketed – the Opposition’s travel costs have leapt 66 per cent to $2.34 million.
It is believed that a greater share of government staff living outside Canberra, as well as the expansion of cabinet from 13 to 21 ministers, were responsible for some of the increase.
