It’s a sad day for television fans worldwide, as we say goodbye to one of the most iconic faces of classic TV.
She was an Emmy award-winning actress best known for her unforgettable role as Major Margaret’ Hot Lips’ Houlihan on the long-running sitcom M*A*S*H. Her work left an indelible mark on Australian and international audiences, making her a beloved figure in television history.
According to her publicist, Harlan Boll, Loretta Swit was found dead by her maid in her New York City apartment at around 10 a.m. on 30 May.
While the official cause of death has not yet been confirmed, authorities believe she passed away at the age of 87 from natural causes.
For many Australians, M*A*S*H was more than just a TV show—it was a cultural touchstone, a nightly ritual, and a source of laughter and tears.
Swit’s portrayal of the tough, witty, and deeply compassionate Major Houlihan was central to the show’s enduring appeal.
Over 11 seasons and 241 episodes, Swit brought nuance and humanity to a character who could have easily been a one-note stereotype. Instead, she became a symbol of strength, resilience, and heart.

Swit’s performance earned her 10 Emmy nominations and two wins, cementing her place in television history.
Her chemistry with the rest of the cast—Alan Alda, Jamie Farr, Mike Farrell, and the late Harry Morgan, to name a few—helped make M*A*S*H one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed series of all time.
The show won 64 awards during its run, and its finale remains one of the most-watched television events in history.
From humble beginnings to Hollywood royalty
Born in New Jersey to Polish parents, Loretta Swit’s love for the stage began early—she first performed at seven.
Her big break came in 1970, when she landed roles in popular American TV shows such as Gunsmoke, Mission: Impossible, and Mannix. She also made memorable appearances in Hawaii Five-O, showcasing her versatility as an actress.
Swit’s talents weren’t limited to the small screen. She appeared in films like Race with the Devil and Deadhead Miles, and was a trained singer, having studied at the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
After M*A*S*H ended in 1983, Swit continued to act but eventually took a step back from the limelight.
She returned to the screen in 2019, after a 21-year hiatus, to star in the faith-based film Play the Flute—a testament to her enduring passion for storytelling.
But Swit’s legacy extends far beyond her acting career. She was a passionate animal rights activist who dedicated much of her later life to advocacy and charity work.
She authored books, painted, and even launched her line of jewellery. Her commitment to making the world a better place was as strong as her commitment to her craft.
Swit married actor and M*A*S*H co-star Dennis Holahan for 12 years before they divorced.
Her passing comes just a month after the death of fellow M*A*S*H star Patrick Adiarte, marking the end of an era for fans of the show.
