Hollywood says goodbye to an Australian martial arts legend

The entertainment world is mourning the loss of a true legend, as news of the passing of Richard Norton, an Australian martial arts icon and Hollywood’s go-to trainer for action stars, has spread across the globe. At the age of 75, Norton’s life and career left an indelible mark on the film industry, shaping the action sequences that have thrilled audiences for decades.

Born into a world far removed from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, Richard Norton’s journey to becoming a martial arts maestro was one of dedication and passion. His mastery of karate and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu earned him black belts, but it was his ability to translate these skills onto the big screen that made him a sought-after figure in the movie business.

Norton’s wife, Judy Green, shared the heartbreaking news of his passing on social media, expressing her profound loss and the void left by the departure of her ‘everything.’ ‘I am numb and devastated, I have no words, I have lost my everything,’ Green shared. ‘I know there is, and will be, lots of love and shock that we have lost this incredible human being.’ ‘The love of my life. I’m using this time to come to terms with my great loss. Judy.’ The outpouring of love and shock from fans and friends alike is a testament to the impact Norton had on those around him.

The tributes from Hollywood’s elite have been pouring in, with Suicide Squad star Karen Fukuhara expressing her condolences. Norton’s career spanned several decades, during which he worked closely with a veritable who’s who of A-list actors, including Jackie Chan, Scarlett Johansson, Charlize Theron, and many more. His ability to train and choreograph fight scenes made him an invaluable asset to productions such as Mad Max: Fury Road, Suicide Squad, and X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Norton’s on-screen presence was equally memorable, with roles in films like the 1980 Chuck Norris classic The Octagon and the Hong Kong action flick The Magic Crystal. His fight scenes were not just displays of physical prowess but also storytelling in motion, captivating audiences and inspiring future generations of martial artists and actors.

In a 2023 interview with the Sunday Herald Sun, Norton reflected on his career and the transition from in front of the camera to behind it. He spoke of the permanence of film and his role in ensuring that the action captured on celluloid was timeless. His dedication to his craft was evident in his work, which will continue to entertain and inspire. ‘I did 60 movies in the ‘80s and ‘90s but the older you get the less roles there are unless you are playing someone’s dad or an ageing gangster, and I get that,’ Norton shared.

Actor Robert Patrick, known for his role in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, paid tribute to Norton, highlighting his extraordinary contributions to martial arts and the film industry. Patrick’s words echoed the sentiments of many who had the privilege of working with Norton, recognising him as an extraordinary individual and a wonderful human being.

The loss of Richard Norton is felt not just in Hollywood but also in the martial arts community and among action cinema enthusiasts. Social media tributes from accounts like Bulletproof Action and Action-Flix.com have highlighted Norton’s legacy as a superb martial artist and a pioneer of action entertainment.

The passing of Richard Norton is a loss felt deeply by his family, fans and those who worked alongside him. His legacy as a martial artist and actor will continue to inspire and shape the industry for years to come.
